Hi guys, Would greatly appreciate some info and tips regarding opening a new Poker Club in the Mid Lands Region.

    * My number 1 question would be the laws surrounding the opening of card rooms?

I am aware of 1 club in South Tipp that was recently raided is this the first of many or what is the current situation?.

    * If going ahead can you just open as a private members club and operate from there or would you have to apply for change of use for the building etc?

    * What is the approx Average rake in the Cash Games in Ireland?

Any other advise or tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanking you in advance.

For what it's worth, I would advise going to a lawyer as you will need to do this after you get advice either way.

New laws (white paper) are coming in soon. The industry is due for a shake up.

Check the other casinos websies - you can find their rake systems on there.

    For example

    The Fitz

    Cash Game Charges:
€50 game is €7.50 per player, per hour.
€100 game is €11 per player, per hour.

Tournaments usually charge 5 - 10% the buyin as registration .

Good luck with your venture ;)

I am in the middle of writing an article on the gaming laws in Ireland including the probable legal ramifications of the current white paper. It won't be done for a good while yet but if you want I'll forward you a copy when it is.

Despite the fact that this comment is short and not really what you asked, CHD does make a valid point.

If you have to ask these questions, perhaps you should focus on something you are more knowledgable about or get a mgt. team in who know the industry.

But, good luck if you go ahead with it.

No problems. If I can keep the jargon down I might post it here but it'll be c.6,000 words so it really depends. Keep your eyes peeled around September for this one.

    Thanks for the insightfull help,

But you have yet to answer the change of use policy or the current situation in the poker industry?

Why would 1 club be raided and shut down while the rest are still operateing?

As an investor i am trying to make sure i dont open a new club only to be raided 2weeks later.

A public forum on the internet is not the place to be looking for legal advice on this matter.

Why not call the law courts, the gardai, a solicitor or someone who can actually offer accurate advice ?

Maybe you could call the local gardai in the area that the club was raided and ask why it was raided ?

The laws in this country on this topic are very ambiguous and are currently in the process of being altered.

As an (astute) investor, it would be advisable to get governmental / legal information on the status of the laws before opening this club.

    I hope this helps.

No legal advice is ever given out on boards and it's not allowed to be specifically asked.

All you will get here is general opinions and experiences by people, so if you want to find out about the actual legal standing of the industry, please consult a Solicitor.

Just to qualify this following a PM.

You can feel free to explain why this may not be the best idea for the OP, if that's what you think, but the golden rule of attack the post, not the poster applies.

A couple of points on this:

    1. In the business section in the Indo this week there was piece about the government renewing their plans at modernising the gaming laws as they currently stand. A lot of work was done on this in McDowells time as justice minister, and it seems they're going to push on with it soon. And if new laws would increase the tax take compared to what they currently get through private members clubs, then I think it'll happen due to the current economic situation. So basically you're looking at a time of uncertainty.

    2. It's very possible that you've missed the boat on this venture; the time to be setting up was about five years ago. Both the poker boom and the economic boom are over. I suggest you do a lot of work on making sure your market is there before starting out with this.

Apparently, that club got singled out because it was giving out free booze to the punters and the local publicans werent too happy. If the Gardai get a complaint, they have to act on it.

As far as i know, you will have to get a change of planning on the building you plan on using. You definately need to speak to someone about that, handy if you know somebody in planning on your local council. If your not comfortable with that, get your solicitor to check it out for you.

If you plan on holding cash games in the club, the rake should average 70-80 euro per hour on a regular 1-2 table.

Any tournament you run, reg should be 10% once you have dealers.

Hope thats a help, and gl in whatever you decide

I agree - give it serious thought.

There are 4 decent premises in Dublin city offering poker and even then it's stretched.

This depends on what the existing use of the building is. Classes of Use are outlined in Part 4 Article 10 of the Planning and Development regulations 2001, prob be able to find it online somewhere. Casino/private members club is not defined in this section so you will probably have to get creative if your applying for permission, prob under Class 2(c). I should charge for this!
