    Ok so I've had a DSLR for about a year now, and haven't bought beyond the kit lens, but have a bit of experience with a few different lenses thanks to some very kind friends lending me stuff! Anyway, so it's time to branch out, and I was hoping on some advice as to where to go next.

    Firstly, I'll pick up a 50mm 1.8, no real issue there.

    I'd also like a good telephoto (doesn't have to be too long as I'm not made of money), and a pretty good wide angle (again I can't go too wide due to financial concerns). So here's what I'm looking at (in ascending price!);

    Telephoto;
    Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM
    Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro
    Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
    Canon70-200mm f/4.0L USM

    Wide Angle;
    Canon 28mm f/2.8
    Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro
    Canon 24mm f/2.8
    Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG (I guess this would just replace the kit lens then)
    Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM
    Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF
    Canon 20mm f/2.8 USM

    I know there's a fair few lenses there, and my request is pretty much hopelessly vague, but I was just wondering what peoples impressions were, or what they would be inclined to go with and why?

    In terms of wide angle you cant go wrong with the Sigma 10-20. The 70-200 f4 is superbly sharp

    Thats some list there abelard. The Canon 70-200mm f/4.0L USM. If you can afford the one with IS it might be a better option. For lower light situations at the long end it makes a world of difference. I don't know too much about wide angle lenses. But if you stick to a fast prime, you can't really go wrong.

    Is the IS worth the couple of hundred euro extra, or could I offset some of the difference with a decent monopod or something?

    I'd definitely second the Sigma 10-20

    I'd wonder if you should consider picking up general purpose walk around lens as well like the Sigma 18-200 as a walk around lens that covers the whole range? I bought that to replace my kit lens and it stays on 90% of the time.

    I own both and love them, they may not be L lenses but they cover everything I want at a fraction of the cost.

    The monopod means extra weight for your bag. You'll need a ball head to place it on too. Quite frankly, If you get the monopod you probably won't use it. The benefits of a monopod over IS are minimal if any at all.

    If I was going to get a kit lens replacement though, I figured mybe the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 EX, at pretty much the same price. Thoughts?

    The 70-200 f2.8L IS is probably a bit out of m price range unfortunately! Unless I ditched the idea of picking up a wide angle and possibly kit lens replacement too!

    Yeah I've pretty much narrowed down the telephoto to the 70-300 f4-5.6 IS and 70-200 f4L IS USM. Now it's a matter of trying to figure out whether the extra money
    is worth it!

    Thanks for all the responses so far!

    OK well if it's strictly between those 2 telephotos
    I'd go for the 70-200 f4L ..
    L is L and you can always get an extender for extra reach..

    the 1.4x will give you 280mm at f5.6, and superior image quality then
    the 70-300 ..

    Well it's not strictly between those two (yeah I know that doesn't help!) but just from the list I had and other's suggestions, I'm strongly leaning towards one or the other!
