We got a new grad in the office last week.

I asked him why he started so early and said that jobs were hard to come by.

Is this the case every where? I changed job at christmas and found it fairly easy getting one.

I think it is getting a bit tighter, but for engineers with little or no experience of course it'll be difficult!

Work-wise I've heard from a few places which are finding it a lot more difficult to get jobs in these days. Granted, they're small places but it's still an issue.

When I left college I had 3 jobs lined up. This new lad said he sent out a lot of CV's but very few got back to him.

He said that there was no recruiters in the colleges either (I know this isnt true of Trinity).

i just graduated with a 2:1 honours mech eng. degree.

Am chuffed with myself. not worrying about not being able to find a job, theres so many avenues out there for someone whos willing to take a chance.

i'm taking the summer off and reckon ill move abroad late in the year.
    more than likely to germany.

Just got a 2.1 (Today:pac:) in Electronic Engineering.

I have been looking for a job since I finished.
The main problem is lack of experience.

There are loads of jobs for people with say 2 years
    to 5 years experience.

I have applied for nearly 15 jobs at this stage and
nothing yet, not even an interview !

I always read that there is a demand for Engineers but
graduates obviously do not fall into this category. :(

Just got my results. 1.1 in elec + comp eng. This doesn't sound good to me!
    Hard to get experience.

I got my job due to the two internships I completed and it did say that they required 2+ years experience. You might be surprised if you apply for one of these jobs. Any sort of internships is key, sometimes more so than grades!

You see this is exactly the reason why someone with no experience will have
    trouble getting a job.

I graduated last year and started working straight away. I threw out CV's to about two dozen places and got a load of interviews (4 or 5) and two job offers. One was in a consultancy and the other was a one year internship, I decided to go for the internship as it sounded cool and I felt the experience was good.

A year down the road and I've now finished the internship. Did the same with my CV's this year in February (same time as the year before), and got NO interviews, even with the extra experience. Just a lot of letters from consultancys saying that they'll be holding their interviews later in the year and they'll contact me then  yeah right :pac:

Two weeks out of the job now, just back from some holidays. Not too worried that I'm out of work as I'm enjoying the time off and have plenty of money saved from the year but I think its a sign of the times. Going to have to hit the dreaded recruitment agencies now to see if they can come up with anything for me.

I got one of mine through college as it was compulsory (DCU - INTRA). The other I applied for myself over my summer break.

Thats is the biggest advice I would give to anyone still in school! Get some sort of internship before you get out there!

In the last couple of years there has been a big demand in civil engineering. I dont know what the demand is like in other sectors but it appears that there is a slow down in demand for any engineers

There appeared to be loads of jobs flying around towards the end of the year and a lot of companies were coming in to talk to us, seemingly eager to hire. I'm not looking for a job at the moment but some of the lads (who would have been at the higher end of the class) were definitely having difficulty getting jobs. Also, I think hardly anyone landed a structural job.
