    Hi

Bit of a novice here, recently purchased a 40D Canon and have been roped into doing a friends small budget wedding. I don't want to be up on the alter with them so reckon I need some kind of zoom, can you recommend which also I assume I need a decent flash if I go for the zoom. Looking for good but cheaper options.

    Thanks

or if you allready have an 18-55 maybe a 55-200 would be a better idea

yep have the 18-55, the bride is paying for the zoom, would prefer the less expensive option as I'm not sure I'll use it much again so a bit of a waste. Can you recommend a flash too....sorry seriously picking your brains here.

    Thanks a mill!

Why don't you want to be up on the altar with them? If you're the official photographer you have to be up there to get the right shots.

I'd forget about the additional zoom. Stick with the lens that you got with the camera - presumably an 18-55. It will do the job just fine. There is a lot to be said for using just one lens for a wedding.

Get a decent flash. Try the Sigma EF-500 DG Super which essentially delivers the same functionality as the Canon 580 EX2 at a fraction of the price.

Comments like this are not at all helpful to the OP. Leaving aside the minor detail that actually, the 17-85 is a good walkabout lens.

ITS a huge lense, so no its not a good walk about lens, aperture wise, lowest f stop is 4.5 so its poor in dim light conditions.
Zoom/focal length change is nothing spectacular
AND its highly pricey, id get a 50mm and then perhaps a 300mm or so , f.18

You really think it's a huge lens?

    Oh My God.

The 17-85 is a good lens, it's not the fastest but the IS is often useful in low light situations.

However someone above mentioned the 50 mm f/1.8 as an option, it's cheap, light and fast and would be a good option.

Does anyone read the OP's message? A 50mm is absolutely not appropriate to his wants in the church.

The sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 macro would suit all your needs I'd say. Half the price of the canon 17-85 and its easier to carry around. I own it by the way so I'd be kind of biased towards it.

I did a search on the photography-on-the-net.com forum and came up with a lot of happy owners of the 17-70mm, some of them ex owners of the canon 17-85.
