It's just as well Jay that you aded the smiley in there. One thing I have never done is slate
any amateur star in Ireland. I still believe that a medal is only a remote possibility in
Beijing; though I have changed my opinion of Nevin and now rate him as our best bet; his style seems to be right for the Olympic scoring system

I figured you must have missed it , as I had expected you to comment on that thread throughout the tournament(having the experienced amateur background that you do) .

'One thing I have never done is slate any amateur star in Ireland.' , except Darren Sutherland ;)

One interesting thing to note is that the real (full) European Championships come only 2 months after the Olympics , I wonder will this change the aims of anyone on the team (eg Sutherland who intends to turn pro after the Olympics) .

No probs if he does.........there is Darren O'Neill in the wings........he is a very accomplished boxer.......last fights have been at 81kg but im sure he would get back down to 75kg for a euro spot.

Agree with the above its excellent for the lads..........I think the high performance program has a lot to do with all the recent success.

Well, not his boxing ability; his attitude outside the ring IMO was a little suss:)

If he does well in the olympics he will probably go pro, if not he might try to get a medal in the euro's, then he'll be going pro on a high and with a reputation already built up.

This will change the aims of all that intend on going pro no doubt.

I know :p , he could certainly work on that persona of his if he wants to get the support of the full country when he turns pro .

With things as they are currently I think he's more disliked than Bernard Dunne , well except a lot more people know Dunne than Sutherland .

I have 25 quid on Nevin at 12/1 for a medal in Beijig from ages ago. And I'm confident he'll do the job, his style is the ultinate for an amateur.

He is quite happy to go one nil up and then run away for the rest of the fight!!! Not pretty but very effective. I saw him basically do this against TJ Doheny in the Irish final, but I knew when he handled Lindberg that he was one to watch...

After him, our best bet imo is Egan, followed by Joyce, then Sutherland, then Barnes...
