If those are the only games you've playing, then an 8600Gt would fly through them at highest settings - you could get way better cards for your money but why bother wasting it if that's the extent of your gaming?

To make it economical though, go for the cheapest 8600GT with 256mb of DDR3 memory. Anything above 256mb is wasted and DDR2 is far slower.

Shouldn't cost more then 60-65 euro - don't spend more then that.

Well if you want a 512MB card then don't bother with the 8600gt as it can't use more than 256MB.

I know its over your budget but if you could stretch to this it would more than meet your COD4 needs and even play Crysis at medium settings. Others here will probably find it available closer to your 120e budget.

    Ordered two of these today.

    Sapphire Radeon HD 4850

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/1304949/art/sapphire-technology/radeon-hd-4850-512-mb-gdd.html

    147 euro's each, faster than 9800gtx, how bad :p

PogMoThoin what reasondo you have to post 150 euro cards that can be beat by cheaper nvdia and ati cards.

    as said 147euros for a 4850 or 95 euros for a 9600

Great price on the GSO, just a re-named 8800GS and good for pretty much anything bar Crysis at max settings on a 19" or below monitor....amazing card for the money (applicable to 8800gs/9600GSO).

Shipping from that site though, how much? Often from mainland europe can be expensive, and only worthwhile if you're buying a few items.

Another good place to check would be adverts - an 8600GT is still a great card if gotten for the right price and would sail through those games including COD4 at 1280x1024 resolution. Adverts should yield one for 30-40 if there's one going. I sold my 7900GS cards for 40 apiece for example; capable of playing COD4 at 1280x1024 high settings without a hitch. Great bargains to be hard in the 2nd hand market with all the cheap cards currently flooding in.

Forget about memory size; that only matters as much in the faster performance cards and on large monitors - where the card has to be fast enough anyway to be able to drive a game at settings that actually require 320+mb texture memory. An 8600GT for example won't make use of more then roughly 256mb of memory; so paying for a 512mb is pretty much pointless and not future proofing it in the slightest. Even a 256mb 8800GT, for example, will outperform the 512mb variants of the older high end cards like 7900GS, 7800GTX etc, except for maybe at resolutions like 2560x1600 where either card wouldn't be able to produce a playable framerate anyway so it doesn't matter. Especially if you're playing at 1440x900 or below - memory size isn't an overly large concern. Most tests show that at 1680x1050 and below, 320+ mb video memory is sufficient for the latest games at high settings (except, and I'm getting tired of saying this, Crysis).

I'd opt for an 8800GS anyway, bottom line. You might not need the performance right now, but you will in a few months when you decide to play something a little more modern.

Just to clarify: the 8800GT is a great card, but the price you had linked was a rip-off. You can get the card for much cheaper if you shop around.

Not for Delta Force Xtreme or Battlefield 2. The 8800GS would chew through them at that resolution with piles of AA and AF.

But the problem is that people say they'll only be playing X and Y, but then suddenly want to play this and that, and get pissed at their cards performance.

If you want to play the latest titles like COD4, a single 8800GS is still a great buy - good right now for most games at high settings at 1680x1050. But it'll slide far quicker into the 'reduced settings' then the slightly more expensive 9600GT/8800GT. If 120 is your budget, it's best to get the best card available within that range - which would be either the old 8800GTS 320mb, the 9600GT, or perhaps the 512mb 8800GT. The older 8800GTS 320mb is a great buy, costing about 110 from most places, they seem to have a lot of stock of the old MSI OC models - an OC'd 8800GTS 320MB can still hand it to the 9600GT in most games at 1680x1050 so it's one to consider.
