Using the Skype phones (international)

Can anyone please help?? Tell me what your experience of the phone is? I've read all the other threads but can't seem to gather an answer to my question.

This september I will be leaving for France and want a cheap way to stay in contact with people at home.

I was told recently about the new skype phones on offer from 3 so I went in to ask advice from the shop where I was told that there would be no problem, that a skype mobile phone bought here from 3 would work there . France does have 3G with orange so I'm thinking it should work. Is it not necessary for there to be a 3 network though?

In theory it sounds brilliant, to good and easy to be true and I would appreciate it if anyone could either confirm or deny whether this is in fact possible. I know it's gotta be more complicated that that.

Cheers for the help- I really appreciate it.

Just came across this thread now but the Skype phone from 3 would only be worthwhile in one of the countries where 3 have networks - France is not one of them.

You'd be better off getting a wi-fi capable phone or one with a hefty data package and using Fring or Nimbuzz.
