16-year-old to face trial for assault in 'Bebo' row

A 16-year-old boy will face trial for attacking a teenager who was stabbed and beaten with knuckle-dusters over comments made about a girl on a Bebo webpage, a judge held today.

The boy has been charged at the Children’s Court with assault causing harm to the teenage boy, at Ringsend Park, in south Dublin, on March 9 last. He also faces connected charges for theft of two mobile phones.

Judge Patrick McMahon was told that the row stemmed from comments posted on the internet on Bebo, a social networking website popular with teenagers.

It was alleged the defendant and another youth, who also faces prosecution, met the boy, believing he made threats and posted a message online saying “stay away from this girl.”

The fight took place at a basketball court and it was alleged the boy was hit by the defendant who was armed with a knuckle-duster, a hand-worn weapon.

It was also alleged he was stabbed by the second youth and suffered superficial wounds to his shoulder.

A file on the teen had been sent the Director of Public Prosecutions who recommended that the case should be sent forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which on conviction can impose lengthier sentences.

However, defence solicitor Michelle Finan pleaded with the Children’s Court to retain jurisdiction for the case and not to send it forward.

She said the south Dublin teen, who was accompanied to court by his parents, had never been in trouble before. The incident started out as a normal row about a girl and ended up in this “appalling situation” which had not been envisaged.

She said he had no previous convictions and hoped to start begin a career soon.

Judge Patrick McMahon refused jurisdiction saying he noted that a knife and knuckle-dusters had been used in the alleged assault.

He held the case was too serious to be retained in the Children’s Court and ordered that it should go forward to the Circuit Court.

The teenager was remanded on bail to appear again next month when he, along with a co-defendant, is to be served with the book of evidence.

Prosecuting Garda Allen Farrell said the victim’s mother did not want compensation from the defendant’s parents or for the boy to be let off with a “slap on the wrist.”

feck sake. beating and stabbing someone over a comment on bebo. those crazy kids

    Theres two sides to it...

    1. Sure it's just bebo yada yada yada

    2. Why would you say it on bebo unless ya meant it?

Moral: Dont say anything on bebo or through txt, over msn etc... ya wouldnt say to someone face to face. How many jams has that gotten people into over the years! I can certainly think of a few! :)

Just think, if only we could get the population of social networking sites to kill and maim each other, how much better the world would be...

I don't like the way that Bebo is almost being blamed for this. I think if he felt enough about it to say something on bebo he probably would have said it in some other way if bebo hadn't existed.

I'm just amazed that some of the dumbf**ks on Bebo can actually use a computer.

I started using orkut when I was in the 2nd year of our marriage. What I did not know was that my wife was networking using myspace. She started using myspace pretty much the same time as I did. We both go that someone special in no time and started spending more time with them. Before long, our relation was in tatters and we divorced.

So should you be having that internet connection at home. Or even better, should you not be banning those social network sites so no one can access them from home? If you have not thought about this.

Think about it. It could save your marriage.

+1. I couldn't agree more. We should get in touch with other like minded people on the internet who also hate social networking. We can keep in touch via MSN or boards' social groups or faceb.......

Umm yeah I don't see how bebo has anything to do with this other than it was the chosen medium to send the message.

    Knacks will be knacks.

Bebo takes alot of slack from the meeeedia.

In completely unrelated news: I'm hoping to go to college in September. Does that mean I have to ditch my bebo and get a facebook?...and what the hell is the difference between the two these days?

Came up in a pub a few nights back (some conversationists us lot) and apparently Facebook is all the range for the campus crew. Bebo is like, sooo secondary school or something?

Bebo has a shocking amount of white-pride nutjobs and 'the war goes on' republicans if you look around a little. strange website.

if the message was sent via text message this probably wouldn't be a story

people get assaulted all the time

Bebo is a freak show and it will take 3 years to flush every trace of your Bebo profile out of the Google Cache .

Facebook only became popular here when people came back from last summers J1.

Hate it myself, very jerky, slow to load site. Only signed up to see some photos a mate told me to look at. It is a pain in the arse to find people you know on it and all, cant even view someones profile to check if it is actually them. There are relatively few Irish people on it, infact of the few people I have added on it two are foreign, three are ex J1`ers and two are Irish mates in college in England, where it may be more true the bebo=kids facebook=grown ups thing. Only log into it if someone posts me something, and I havent even signed up under my proper name like it demands, so Id be hard to find :D
    Bebo is well handy tbh.
