My previous employer put me on to something recently when I was looking into visual authentication stuff.
A bank in the states lets you upload a wallpaper to your online banking account.
If you dont see this wallpaper when you enter your username, then you shouldn't enter your password, as you are at the wrong site.
This is a very simple solution to the phishing problem which is a very good use of visual authentication. It's alot more accessible to the average user compared to checking certificates for verification, etc...
What other simple and effective solutions to problems have you seen that work just as well if not better then their more complicated and technical counterparts?

I dont have the name of the bank that did it, but when I was discussing with another colleague, he indicated that this was pioneered by yahoo.
I'd have to go do a bit more looking ot find out for sure....

Do you know his account number? Or his mothers maiden name? We can try find out the bank then.

It was Bank of America from what he recalls, but he doesnt have the link to the article.
    Still an interesting idea.

I was reading recently about another visual authentication method involving two images that look like white noise, but reveal a password if they are overlayed correctly (either electronically, or by prining on acetate, etc...) http://87zero.com/

Not as simple as what Bank of America were doing, but interesting nonetheless.
Then again - these ideas do come and go a fair bit. It'll probably be forgotten about like the hundreds of other good ideas that surface every year.
