Whooping cough

I've been taking delsym for my cough as it is a suppressant, but when I went to buy more I was told it's not being made any more?
Can anyone tell me an alternative? Just I found this was the only effective thing against my whooping cough, as it's 12hr between dosages.
I had to buy a 'dry cough' syrup (the chemist suggested that one but I wasn't impressed with the servers attitude) but that doesn't work as well as the delsym.

    Thanks for any help :)

Have you done the whole, putting your head over a bowl of steaming water and a towel over your head?

Had the whooping cough as a kid and that's all i can remember doing

Thanks Lil' Smiler - I had the whooping cough as a child also, and seems that didn't work. I had it on and off for a good few years then. And I've had it for the past two years on and off too.

You have had whooping cough for 2 years! Have you seen anybody about this?

I should add Benylin for Dry Coughs is more or less the same as Delsym

You sure that's whooping cough? A two year bacterial infection would be a worrying thing. Whooping cough should resolve in a few months and tends to be asymptomatic in adults besides that. If you haven't recently, you really should talk to a Doctor because that sounds too persistent to be a simple infection.

Hi - when I got the whooping cough as a child (after the vaccine) I had it on and off for a few years, every time I got a cold, I'd have the cough.
I got a tetnus with whooping cough booster about 2 years ago, (the doctor there said I would be fine) but within a week I had the cough. I had it on and off strongly for a few months - I was home at that point and the doctor told me to try Delsym which I did.
from then on, when I got a cold / flu / sometimes randomly would get the whooping cough back. I hadn't had it since before Christmas but it came back last friday.

Thanks about the dry cough - I rang my chemist and she said to up the dosage a little on the dry cough bottle (to bring it closer to the delsym dosage)

I'm hesitant to argue on this as I wouldn't want to be seen as giving medical advice... but it really sounds like something a bit odd is going on there if you are getting pertussis re-infection or resurgence over a two year period. Perhaps it is some other persistant infection, or a chronic respiratory problem, but at any rate you shouldn't have to put up it. A cough bottle may just be treating symptoms of something you could sort out easily. If you haven't talked to your doctor about this since the booster, perhaps you should.

Well it's just that when I had it when I was younger it was the same problem - it hung around for a long time after and my mother would have brought me to my doctor. I was abroad when I got the booster and I told my GP when I came back about it (because the cough was quite annoying at that point).
I haven't had the cough since before Christmas, and there are lots of things that can set it off again. Even excessive laughing (which happened to me at a comedy gig last year -I was coughing on and off for a few days).

If it makes any difference I may have a crap immune system when it comes to vaccines, as I've had all my shots, but had the german measles, the mumps 3 times and the whooping cough twice.

(btw I appreciate your replies, I know it's not medical advice, if it does persist longer than this week I will go back to my doctor to ask him)

Well that's all fair enough. Just so long as you're not putting yourself through undue discomfort. If the immunity thing is bothersome, consider mentioning that to your GP. Three bouts of mumps certainly can't have been fun!
