Whirlpool dishwasher intermittent wash cycle

    Hi,
    I have a six year old integrated Whirlpool dishwasher which when started any of its wash cycles stays on continuously.

    Symptoms are ....

    Sometimes it heats the water and sometimes not.
    Sometimes stays on continously until door is opened and
    program cancelled manually.

    It appears to be a faulty controller but not sure, local service guy
    didnt want to know what the problem was just said to buy a new one.

    Any ideas ?
