    Was reading this article :

    http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=748473

Just wondering has anyone ever heard of him before?

We might be able to persuade him to play for us, could do with some new midfielders now that our only good one ever, Kevin Kilbane, is getting older

Yes, a player from the second division in Holland is the answer to all of our dreams.

    ffs.

    Minnowism of the highest order.

Wonder is he as good as David Connelly? He seemed to find his level in Dutch second tier? Any links for Maguire to Sunderland yet?

But he doesn't play in the eL so he more than qualifies

He's only 18 so it's hardly fair to write him off because he's playing in the second tier at such a young age..

BTW i know nothing about him. I would like to see if growing up in Holland playing their style of football has made him much better technically than our young players.

Well he should get a chance to play First division/Top Flight next season anwyays, so we might see him on euro goals or something!! If he has alredy played U19s, does that mean he can never play for Ireland (not quite sure of those rules!)

And then when scores a goal, the whole of this message board will be looking at the YouTube and slating John Delaney and GioTrap for not getting him.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

No, he can still play for Ireland.

He shouldn't though, his obvious intention is to play for Holland, so he should be let nowhere near a green jersey, imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,294 ✭✭✭gucci

Maybe the FAI can relaunch that vicious orange jersey to try and trick him into turning out for Ireland! Im sure once he gets his move to sunderland he will be a shoe in for ireland anyways.

Obviously the Dutch premier league is the pinnicle of football now, when someone of Steve McClarens ability is moving over there too!

Sean McCaffrey spoke to him before about playing for Ireland, and he turned us down, he played against Ireland at U-18 level last year for the Dutch, so I don't see it happening.

Word is Trap will call up him and James McCarthy up for the match against Norway....fairly unreliable source, but I wouldn't rule it out.

If he is called up for Ireland, in any shape or form, I'll have lost all remaining faith in football, at a national level, in this country.

Also, any clown who welcomes this is NOT a proper Ireland fan, is not a proper football fan and shouldn't claim to be either.

If this Dutch person, who has played for Holland, who has never shown any intentions of representing Ireland, in any shape or form, gets anywhere an ireland jersey, the FAI and it's fans can kiss my white hairy hole.

    Numpties.

He played for Ireland at under-15 level, and was given two minutes. They said they would 'be in touch' and never did.

    pwnd

    :D

It more just confirms the underrage setup in the country. I understand we didn't produce him, but we are a small country.

    LOL though...McGeady McCarthy Maguire Ireland

The only Irish player in the midfield.

Anyway he's done nothing to be called up(he did reject PSV though)....he's not going to have any say until the euro 2012 campaign if he does play for us.

There was a piece in the Indo yesterday about him and about how the FAI called him up for a two game tournament to see what he was like. He got 15 mins of action...! How the fcuk would they make their judment on him on 15mins of play with unfamiliar teammates??

I'm not a fan of the whole Granny rule players becomming Irish. I do however think someone with an Irish parent does have the right to consider themselves Irish.
I will be keeping an eye on him to see how he goes but he sounds like a promising prospect. Debut at 16 and ever present for over a year now. And i know it is only Dutch 2nd tier but it is still a reasonable standard with the onus on technical ability as it always is in Holland.

I think we should be delighted if he goes for us, but I would understand if he declared for Holland instead as he has a real shot at winning things if he's good enough to play for them.

It seems the only reason he decided to play for Holland is because he was messed around by Ireland.

You can take the boy out of Ireland, but you can't take Ireland out of the boy.

To me being Irish is like death in that movie with Michael J Fox.

Here is a look at the guy in the flesh:

If he has an Irish father then you'd think he would be in touch with his Irish roots to a considerable degree. Hopefully he will consider playing for Ireland. A father's influence should surely count for a lot where football is concerned. :D

I'd love to know whether the bidding war between Holland's top clubs did ever take place, but Maguire decided to move to Utrecht. Or if Utrecht was the best team which courted him.

Trap should do his bit on this one. He's not that young. Given that he'll be 19 in October, at 20 for the potential WC, then I think he's of a decent age to be a part of Irish squads. He won't be the next Terry Dixon, i.e far too young, capped before anyone else does it.

Yeah if I ever have a child he'd never even consider not playing for Ireland, and I'd make sure of it

Only just found the thread now.

We had Barry Maguire chatting to Irish fans on the YBIG Football Show this week. He was a total gent and would love to play for Ireland one day.

Said no when he had a shout for Holland circa when this thread started.

No idea if he's any good tbh but I wouldn't like someone playing for Ireland that only wants to play because he won't get into the Dutch setup.
If he wants to play then fair enough but there's players there that would kill to play for Ireland.

Was Michael O'Neill successful in enticing Robert Cullen to play for the North?

4 years on, what level is he playing at now out of interest?

Untrue. Was called up for a holland u20 game after being left out of the Irish squad so accepted the call up.

The genius of Don Givens in full force.

If we're looking at players for second tier clubs, i hear there's a fella at Forest who's pretty handy with a ball at his feet....

He is only 22, he has time on his side, and playing in the dutch league, you can only get better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,465 ✭✭✭kitakyushu

Absolutely he should be picked. He can take over from Andy Reid on the sing-song sessions.

Although make sure he doesn't indulge in any of this two-footed nonsense. It'll only make the other players feel like they wasted their childhoods.

David Connolly was playing in the Dutch league at 22. The future is not always certain.
