You might get more responses in the Mac forum :)

What, that Apple make computers and those computers generate errors like millions of other computers? :)

Moved from the Laptop forum. Probably better suited here, if it is going to get all political.

I have a 4 year-old iBook G4 that's still running perfectly. Never had a single problem with it.

Have you tried running a hardware test using the install cd?

Kernel panic is pretty generic....is there a specific known-issue you are referring to?

Better still move it to the Conspiracy theory forum:D

Anyway, Kernel panics can be caused by a range of things. if it has onlt started, look at the obvious:
have you installed or added new hardware lately? USB HD, RAM?
    Any new applications?

Will it start up in safe mode.

You need to check your logs. Easiest way is to open the console app and click the log icon in the top left position. Look for crashreporter or panic logs. These are time stamped and can be used to interrogate the problem. Have fun :)

sorry that was posted in the depths of frustration.the kernel panics were caused by the airport card built in which cannot be removed therefore requiring a new logic board which would cost more than the laptop is worth.considering i only use the ibook for internet use this was annoying.
luckily some french guy posted a topic on you tube how to remedy this with a piece of card pressed against the airport card.
ive no conspiracy issue with apple per say its just that there seems to be a lot of users complaining of this problem and a lot of posts being removed from their forum regarding this problem thats all..

Any chance of a link to one of these posts ? I've never heard this problem before. Is it the card is faulty or it's touching something it shouldn't . The iBook family suffered several hardware problems that caused KPs - one was a soldering problem with the GPU. I have one of these yokes here :(

By the way I'm pretty sure the Airport cards in all iBooks are removable - at least in any I've come across it is. The MacBook now is a different story . . .

I believe the last 2 or so revisions of the ibook had a built-in Airport card that was not removable.

Same thing happened with my iBook G4. The wireless card (not removable) causes kernel panics and the grey screen of death...

Disabling wireless seems to make it work fine (although sometimes have trouble when turning it on, have to press down and basically clamp it with your fingers just to the left of the trackpad).

Pisser not having wireless on it though... gonna get myself a nice cheap second hand MacBook I think

Oh God, i have an ibook G4 myself and im hoping that i dont get the same problems. It has the built in Airport card too so im praying right now. If it'll see me out for another few months or so i'll be happy.

Quick update folks. Cracked the iBook open, put a bit of card between the plastic bridge thingy over the airport card and put it back together and no more kernel panics.

Wireless is back up and running :)

    Followed these instructions:

You'll notice a bit where it's taking apart the case just under the keyboard. There's a little magnetic thing over the last screw. Took me a little while to realise that if you just jig this a bit it'll come off.

If you're handy enough with a screwdriver and prepared to document where each screw you took out came from it's well worth it. Was ready to buy a new laptop until I thought it'd be a good idea to give that a try. Saved me a few quid :D
