    hi all,

have decided to seek some opinion before i have to make any drastic decisions about buying a new machine.

    here is my dilema:

i have a non-intel mac mini with all of my files, itunes etc on it. just moved into a shared accomodation that has wireless ntl broadband.

the mini doesn't have an airport card fitted and it can't be upgraded to take one. a friend of mine says that a wireless usb ethernet connection thing should do the trick and connect me to the wireless network.

is this correct? anyone got any idea what i should be looking for exactly.

thanks in advance for any tips.

I'm pretty sure that you can get some D-Link USB wireless adapters that work with the older Mac mini's. Maybe some Belkin adapters too ... but I don't think there are many other vendors.

Have a look at this one ... should be a lot cheaper than a new machine.

Yeah, a USB dongle should do the trick.

Ralink equipped wifi devices are supported with drivers available on Ralinks website. Cheapest one I found was 24.95 euro in Easons, it was branded Sweex. This site is useful.

The D-Link DWL-G122 ver. C1 should also work but I believe the version is important. I've used the C1 version because it works with Linux distros and MacOS. Other versions use a different chipset that wasn't supported by Linux or Mac at the time - circa Tiger 10.4.4 this of course may have changed since.

Hawking Technologies also support the Mac well and do a very good USB unit with external antenna which might be useful if the Mini is buried away under a TV system. They're a little pricey though.

thanks to one and all for your replies very helpful indeed.

Kramxw i would buy that from you but i'm in dublin and sorting out postage/payment might not be so easy.

i'll have a look around online for the best product as price isn't always the main consideration when looking for a piece that will last.

    thanks again.
