Make friends with the DJs you see in the clubs/pubs, they'll give you hints and contacts. Do you know anyone who owns a pub or similar that can let you play?
Ask in Bierhaus, Blue Note and those places. Just go up to the DJ and chat, usually not a problem.

Best place to learn is in the bedroom on your own decks and mixer. When you get the skills and courage approach the local pubs.

    Another "missing info" original post.

OP, stay in school, keep listening to good music and one day you'll be a DJ.

Extract a set of decks from your parents - any kind will do, even a cheapo all-in-one to start off on (as these are still seemingly industry-standard in pubs/disco bars despite being industry standard nearly 8 years ago!).

Give up any realistic hope of getting to play to anything more than your mates for AT LEAST 3 years.

    Practice practice practice practice.

if i were going to get equipment id opt to buy some cdjs.dont bother getting technics as its becoming harder and more expensive to buy vinyl these days.
alot of tracks you want might only be available on download sites.
most top name djs use cds these days.
and dont worry its not cheating:)
but apart from that its going to be unlikely youll get a gig until your older.plus you should only be doing it because you love it and not care about getting gigs just yet

The only place you'll get to play is either in your house or someone elses house at the moment. CD decks wouldn't be my usual thing to promote because I love my vinyl records but CD decks are the cheaper option.

Since your 13, you've plenty of time to get practicing. Set yourself some goals.

1 learn your tunes and no them inside out (knowing your tunes well makes it easier).
2 Learn to mix properly (beatmatching).
3 Have some friends around to yours and see what they think.
4 Aim to do some house parties (mates birthdays are a good excuse).
5 If you feel confident enough, do school disco's and the likes.

If by 15/16 your doing that, by the time your old enough to be in proper night clubs, you'll be good enough to play in them and will already have started building your CV.

What ever you do, best of luck.

First thing is since you are 13, you will not be able to play in a pub or club for at least another 5 years.

so you have 5 years to perfect your skillz.

Secondly it is likely that by the time you are in a position to play, who knows how much the scene will have changed....

Will most venues even have technics by then??

I played in the Blue Note for a couple of years using two laptops and a loop sampler, i fact I think I was the first DJ to have a residency in Galway using laptops.

Since you obviously have access to a computer I would recommend you use that. Eventually you will want to buy a laptop that will be used only for gigging, but till then even an old desktop will do. If you do have some money to spend, the most important puchase (after music of course) is a decent soundcard. As for software, tryout the free programs like sonys demo of Acid or the most excellent Reaper.

Or if you want the killer app - then Ableton live is your only man, lest things change dramatically over the next five years.

Which brings us nice on to the next point the music.

Of course the music will have changed by the time you are gigging. But nonetheless now is a good time to experiment with different genres and fine that which best suits you. you will need to find sources that can supply the type of tunes you require.

If you are really adventurous you can supplement other peoples tunes with your own or even your own remixes of other peoples.

I did this the opposite way round for the Blue Note, ALL the music was mine, this put a lot of pressure on me to have a new set each gig. Now I would do it differently and simply mix my own tunes into a more regular set.

While practising record everything and pass it on to your friends. Listening to your own tunes with other people in the room alters your perception dramatically. you will notice stuff a lot easier and you will be very aware of other peoples reactions.

If you find yourself fast forwarding to the "good bit" or teling your frinds "hold on the good bit is coming" then you know you probably just played 10 minutes of crap.

Draw up tracklists and notes, keep those notes up to date.

and if you do get a mix together soon, send me a copy and I'll let you know what I think?

of course you can also checkout my site at www.DJtechbot.com for more info :)
