Jazz Bass Pickups

Am looking to upgrade the pickups on my Highway One jazz. Find them to be a little muddy on the low end. Had always planned to get new pickups for it anyway.

Only problem is I've really no idea what to get. Would be looking for something with more punch + clarity, like when you turn the treble up you don't get the horrible background noise. From reading user reviews it looks like the DiMarzio Model J's would be alright. Also the DiMarzio Ultra Jazz are noiseless, wouldn't mind getting rid of them hum (although it doesn't bother me that much), although from what I'm reading you get a better sound from the model J's.

Anybody any experience with either? Any other pickup recommendations?

I've got some nice Delano Pickups in my new bass. Just waiting on it back from Derrick Nelson. :(

    Here's the pickups...

Sorry I should also mention that they're hum-cancelling. There are two coils per pickup, one for E & A and one for D & G. :)

I have a set of DiMarzio Ultra Jazz. Quite nice.

There's a good thread on talkbass where a guy has tested a huge amount of Jazz pickups on the same bass... Doctor Dimento .... or something like that, shouldn't be too hard to find.

    Another option would be bassculture.de

Just tell Christopf the sound you want and he'll make them. I know he has some stock Jazz pickups that are fairly keenly priced. He's a good guy.

Also how easy is it to change the pickups myself? Have never tried messing with the electronics of any of my basses.

It's easy, but practice your soldering technique on something you don't mind losing before you do it for real.

From reading a bit more, I think I'll go with the Model J over the Ultra Jazz. Have another bass with active MEC soapbars, so would like something completely different (which is why I got a Jazz in the first place). So having noiseless pickups isn't really a big thing here.

Not many places seem to sell them. Looking to order off thomann, but they only have the set. Will they fit in a regular Jazz body ok? I don't know where to find the measurements of my stock pickups.

Edit: Nevermind, found the dimensions of the Model J's and just measured the pickups on my bass myself and they seem to match up.
