I'm starting to do a few gigs in pubs and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for songs to play that you think the punters would go for.

Also, a friend has advised me to learn the national anthem to play at the end of the gigs, but I've always found that to be overly patriotic, any thoughts?

Have it in the bag. Don't play it if you don't want to. At certain spots though, certain people get a tad aggressive if you don't play it. So if you think this may happen, its good to have it to play. I never play it myself, but if I accepted a gig in a republican bar, I'd have to consider that thats what I'd have to do.
