    Hello Forum,

I'm interested in living in Wicklow, and would like to either buy a house or buy some land and build a house? I've lots of various stories about restrictions on buying house or land in Wicklow? Whats the story?

Depends what part you want to live in. The legislation is basically illegal anyway so it's only a matter of time before it's repealed

Its up in the European Court of Justice at the moment. The Wicklow and Laois County Councils are attempting to defend it. Its pretty inevitable that it will be repealed, and given the number of cases for compensation against both councils, there could be hell to pay over it........

How does it work? How can wicklow stop you from building or owning your own place even if your from out side?

From my understanding you need to check what the land is marked for. If it is marked as being for agricultural use, you cannot build on it, even if the purpose of you buying the land was to build. You need to check it out carefully, as otherwise you will not get planning permission for the land.

They impose the conditions during the planning process.
If you cannot prove your links with the location (Laois Co.Co. are demanding letters from Parish Priests, Birth Certs, details of where you went to school, details of where you are working etc) you will not be granted planning permission. If you are a developer- you may be limited in who you are allowed to sell the houses to (the implication being if you disobey the rule that you will not get future planning permissions).

Wicklow administer it in a similar manner.
