Can anyone recomend a website that has reliable reviews on guitars and gear. Harmony Central is a fricken joke.....always was.
Some guys give their guitars 10 out of 10 in each catagory, when their style of play is Gospel/Death/Maggot metal......dun de de dun dun on the guitar and gives it 10 marks.

As with every review, you need to take it with a HUGE pinch of salt. Best thing is to try them out for yourself. Also what I do is search on the many guitar forums for that model and see peoples experiences with it.

I don't know what the style of music has to do with anything. Theres no doubt that HC is pretty useless when it comes to reviews, but that goes for everything and not just people playing metal..

If you want an actual 'review' you're best to stick with a professional publication (eg your favoured guitar magazine). If you just want a rough and general consensus, ask around on the forums. But as mentioned, take everything with a pinch of salt until youve had a chance to form your own opinion.

Not knockin' the Metal.....but when you read a full review on HC where the guy gives it 10 out of 10 in every department and then read the summary at the end.....he tells you he plays death/morbid/superdeath metal......

Tone might not be his strong point.........

    That's ridiculous.

Metal players of all descriptions value tone just as much as any other players. Just because the tonal qualities they're looking for may be different to a blues (or whatever) player, doesnt make them any less relevant.

You can see that a guy plays metal and say 'Ill disregard his opinion because he's probably looking for different things in a guitar than me', but to make out like all metal players are tone-deaf morons is closed-minded and plain incorrect.

I find harmony Central reviews are a bit generous alright, it's rare you'll find something negative, it's handy enough to read about the guitar you're thinking of buying but just take what is said with a massive pinch of salt.
I find googling reviews will throw up some good blogs where people seem to note the good and bad and take everything into account. Just be wary of everything you read.

I think your problem Darren, is that you cannot take a number out of 10 to be an accurate description of a guitar. Harmony Central can be a fantastic resource for reviews if you actually bother to read the reviews, take them in context, and pay little or no attention to the fairly meaningless numbers.

For example, someone might score a very cheap guitar highly (lets say 9/10) because it could exceed their expectations of guitars from that price range, but that could hardly mean that a budget guitar is of the same quality as a Gibson Les Paul Supreme that's also been rated 9/10. Context is paramount to making the site work for you, and for you to get the best out of the it, you need to read the reviews thoroughly and understand the points made by the writer from their standpoint.

Tone is as important to every musician equally, there is no universal "Good tone" because it's about as personal as you can get, so genre has to be taken in context too. You can never rely on a score, you need to read the review and understand why the score was given. There are terrible, poor written reviews littering the site, but there are also very well written and accurate reviews as well, and you just have to read and discern them for yourself.

About.Com have a pretty good and impartial review site, including helping you decide whether you should start with acoustic or electric, buying online, top 5 acoustic/top 5 electric etc.

    Hope this helps!
