My Wife dropped my laptop yesterday and the screen is fecked. Inspiron 6400. I will try and get a replacement screen, but also needs a new battery, its about 18mts old.

Anyways........ as good an excuse to replace it as any.

All i use it for is surfing, downloading stuff, playing poker, watching the odd movie. No Games !

I dont need 17" but was looking at this "TOSHIBA Satellite P200D-139" http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/758252/art/toshiba/satellite-p200d-139.html#tab-related-prod battery life aint really a factor either as it is always plugged in, would be nice to get through a movie on battery, thats about it. I would like to keep it under the €750 mark.

Any other sugestions ? As you can see, no "must haves" im easily pleased......:D

My house insurance is up next week, would look very iffy to throw a claim on now.....lol. Anyway, its only a few hundred euro.

have not seen any dell with 17" screen for under €500 ?

They took your money for insurance for the full year. Use it.

im going to tell you how to fix your laptop for 123 euro!

last week i rang Dell to price up some replacement parts from inspiron 6000 laptop.

basically my screen was fecked, and i needed a new key pad as i was missing buttons and the clips for holding the keys down were broke too so no chance of simply replacing the keys.

so i rang dell to price the stuff :

new keyboard = 54 euro inc vat and delivery
new screen = 288 euro plus vat and delivery.

    heres where you save

the girl told me not to order the parts but instead to take out an extended warrenty for 2 years at a cost of 123 euro. she then told me to wait 2 days for the warrenty to be in thier system then ring the technical dept and arrange for a technician to come out and replcae the parts.

i did that on tuesday and by friday i had a new screen and keypad fitted for the grand sum of 123 euro plus i have another 2 years acidental warrenty left!!!

they dont replce batteries on the warrenty though.
    hope this helps.

Are you sure you want a 17" laptop though. In my opinion they are far far too big for laptops

These will do everything youve said you need.

Get a 9 cell battery and you should get about 5 hours out of it.

Only reason for a laptop as opposed to a desktop is the mobility factor, i like to sit in the conservatory and loose money.....:D, also, ever trying to drag a desktop to the toilet when you are at the final table !!

The toshiba you've linked to looks quite good. The only problem I would see is the poker apps. From other poker users requesting laptops they always seem to want to have 4 tables going at once. I'm not sure if this means you would need a more powerful laptop but it is definitely something to consider. If it's only one table then I can't see any problems.

If it's only going to be moved around the house then go with the 17", if you plan on using it a lot outside of the house then the 17" can be a bit of a pain for that. Saying that you do get used to it. Make sure to get a backpack style bag instead of a manbag.

If you needed a 2nd PC, like a desktop, LCDless laptops are quite handy (small, compact). Take off the damaged screen and pick up a flatscreen LCD and there ya go! We did it, and now its a handy PC for just browsing the net in the morning or whenever.

Just a suggestion if you plan to keep the damaged laptop.
