Jitter when playing back divx on vista

I've set up the following system
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/shoplist.as...B-383DC5EA7BD1
I've also got a Terratec Cneryg DVB2 card installed.

I've set it up so the I can dual boot between Vista and XP.

XP and Vista had no problems with drivers and h/w supports. However, video playback is much smoother in XP!!! Exactly every minute under vista, playback via the DBV card or playback of mpeg/divx there's a very slight but noticable stutter! The image quality is perfect on both Vista and XP, but every minute under Vista there's a 1 or 2 second stutter. Has anyone got a solution for this? This never happens with XP!

I don't want to use XP as I reeally like Vista MCE because of the interface to my movies and pics. Any way to improve playback on Vista?

The codecs I'm using is the same on both (cyberlink).

maybe check in taskmanager, see if you can spot if any process or program is using the cpu every time it happens

you could also try increase the priority of the programs you're playing back video with by right clicking on the program in taskmanager and setting to high

Thanks for the input - I've tried both things you suggested and I could see nothig in the taskmanager that could be causing it. Also, the CPU graph does spike a little when it happens but not too much

Using coreAVC codecs for HD playback (i.e. display BBC HD via DVB-S2 card) and I'm seeing the same thing - jitter EXACTLY every 1 minute!

Really feels like it's a vista issue and not a codec problem! The same codecs work on the same PC when I boot into XP!

Are you using Windows Media Player to play those movies? I absolutely hate the performance of WMP11.

Try installing the VLC Player and see if that doesnt improve things for you.

made some real progress with this problem.

I downloaded sysinternals process monitor. It give great visibility into all the calls all exes makes on a system. I can see one executable (explorer.exe) call the function queryfullsizeinformationvolume every minute at the exact time the video playback stutters!!! It's the only strange thing that's in the process list and the fact that it happens every minute seems to join the dots!

queryfullsizeinformationvolume seems to be something to do with an auto check that Vista does to see if the drives are filling up. Does anyone know how to turn this check off?

I tried VLC - same issue. I'm pretty sure it's an underlying vista issue and not a code/player problem

    some goggliong got this:

What you may be seeing here is XP's Low Disk Space Notification . With Process Monitor it can be seen checking all your drives every minute. To stop this activity will require a simple registry edit. Navigate to this registry key.
    Hkey Current User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look for the value named NoLowDiskSpaceChecks. If the value exists, it's probably set to 0, which is the default value for the key.To change the value, double-click it. You will see the Edit String screen. Enter a value of 1 in the Value Data field and click OK.

If the value doesn't exist, you'll need to add it. Select New | DWORD Value from the Edit menu. The new value will appear in the right pane, prompting you for a value name. Type NoLowDiskSpaceChecks and press Enter

Double-click the new value. You'll then see the Edit DWORD Value screen. Enter a value of 1 in the Value Data field and click OK

After turning off the disk space check the problem still persisted!

Got to the bottoom of this one with more from Sysinternals. It was to do with the wireless adapter in the PC!!! From the Sysinternals GUI I could see there were DPCs (deferred procedure calls) from the wireless NIC that were only recalled every minute. I guess it happened to be sitting on the sime timed thread in Vista that dealt with the disk space check.

I updated to the latest version of the NIC driver and all is well again.

Thanks for all the help and advice from here.

Video performance (amongst other things) really sucks on a fresh vista install. It took me a while before I got smooth video. First get the latest drivers for your video card. I'm using the K-Lite full codec pack and that seems to help a lot.
