this is most likely a stupid question but does it make a difference if i leave my kit lens on my camera when im not using it for a long time (eg. a week) or should i take the lens off and replace the cap on the camera body? thanks

Yes, you should take the lens off and put the caps on.

The metal contacts between the lens and camera can fuse together and become damaged.
