YouTube videos 'not available in your country'

Posting this in AH because I can't see anywhere else appropriate. Mods, please move if there's somewhere better.

I followed two links recently, one for a clip from The Riches and the other for a preview for a Panorama expose on the use of child labour by Primark.

(I now burn with shame that I ever bought those suspiciously cheap clothes.)

In both cases I got a notice saying "This video is not available in your country".

    What's the story?

I'm getting "Video has been removed" messages a lot recently when others can view it (On threads here for example).

Sometimes if I try again within a few mins I can see it, other times not at all.

They're starting to lock down videos due to IP addresses so for example, only people in England, who pay the BBC their licence fee, can watch BBC videos.

It's getting more common to do this so content providers can be assured that only certain countries can view their videos. Same with advertisers.

I see net neutrality is going out the window
Im sure loads of proxies will start up, based on their location, so you can watch regional you-tube vids

Yeah, I think there's a few already in existence given that some of the lads on the poker forum have been using them to watch stuff on an American site that won't allow anyone but US IP addresses.

Always a way around these kind of things really, it's just not a good sign, as you said, net neutrality going out the window.

When that happened to my friend I jokingly suggested switching from the Irish version of YouTube to the UK or International one and it actually worked :)

    That actually worked - thanks!

    The preview video's here:

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qIcKTpb9UnE

and you can watch it if you switch to the UK version, then you can switch back again afterwards. Handy!

Whyatever about net neutrality, an awful lot of news sites have domestic and international versions.

I imagine 80%+ of advertising is location specific.
