Whats the psp like as a media player, is it easy to get xvid & divx files on to it and is it any good at playing them, can you for instance track through a video, easily go back and forward, how does it compare to something like an archos

There are some really good free programs for transferring media onto your PSP:

There's XVid4PSP,PSP Max Media Manager and Sony Media Manager. The Sony Media manager website is in Japanese but the program can be installed in English.

Those programs enable you to convert videos easy. I use Max Media Manager if I want a file on my PSP quickly and don't really care about the quality. The quality is good, but if you encode with XVid4PSP the quality is DVD quality, but it takes longer to encode. So you're looking at about an hour on a good computer encoding a 90-120 minute movie on XVid4PSP, versus about 30 minutes on Max Media Manager. I always use XVid4PSP for videos I'm going to watch on my TV from my PSP.

The Sony Media Manager is good for organising your videos.

At the moment, although Sony have paid for DivX rights and the PS3 is able to play DivX videos, the PSP can't... yet. Most likely there's going to be a firmware update that will enable it in the near future. So until then you'll have to convert DivX and XVid videos which is a bit of a pain. I wish Sony would get their thumb out. That being said, if you have a PS3 you can stream anything you have on it easily so that's quite handy if you're in bed watchin stuff or near a wireless hot spot.

I think that it takes a bit more effort to put videos on a PSP than on an Archos, and you can get a 160GB Archos versus a 16GB Pro Duo card for PSP, so I guess it all comes down to whether you're a fan of removable storage or not and whether you mind having to convert your videos. Do you have to convert videos for an Archos?

The screens are the same size, so I guess the bonus with the PSP is that it does more than just videos, and looks nicer than an Archos. Get yourself a good pair of headphones and you're set.

    :pac:

I use mine every single day on the train. The battery life is a winner if you convert to pmp / H264 (as it decodes it in hardware) and use PMPlayer advance. I've been using it now for nearly 2 and a half years (jesus) and still haven't found anything better than it.

I convert stuff in batches. 2 pass, 600Kbps or higher looks super. If space is an issue, you can go as low as 250Kbps with a 2 pass encode and it's still watchable.

I had a psp a while ago, and while i found the conversion annoying, I can attest to the screen being brilliant for watching video on.

If i found one cheap enough with a decent memory stick I may pick one up again. It's a great device if you exploit it to its full potential.
