Id say sigma has a macro mode which is quiet good,Comes with a lens hood too which is a plus

I had the sigma and it is WELL worth the price its insane. It ain't excellent, but it's really good value as it has a decent macro feature too.

If you have the money you could try another lens which was recommended to me, the Canon 70-300 usm with image stabilization. Supposedly a "hidden L lens" according to a website that reviewed it. Just a beginner, and totally broke at the moment so going for one of these cheapies. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Anyone have or used the canon 75-300? Whats the quality of the lens like and does the USM make much of a difference to the noise or speed of focus?

I got the Canon 75-300 when I bought my 350D. It did me for a while, but I found it soft, and there was subtle purple fringing around light to dark transitions (for instance between the sky and a building). The reach was great, especially with a 1.6 crop factor, but for the above reasons I wouldn't recommend it. I've no experience of the other lenses, so don't know how they compare. For all I know, they could be worse, although I doubt it.

So the tamron or the sigma would be better? Anyone like to share any differences they have noticed, or opinions of which is a better buy?

I've had the Sigma for ages now, and I love it. It's always in my bag and has a nice macro mode. I'd recommend it anyway.
