    Hey y'all,

Lee is heading over this way, to run over some UC concepts with my lads. :) We've decided to open up this special "mini-workshop" to anyone who might be interested in Combatives or Self-protection. It is suitable for all levels of training.

For anyone unfamiliar with Lee Morrison's work - he is considered to be one of the top guys around for "Combatives" and all aspects of "self-protection" training.

The venue is going to be in Kildare, and places will be limited.

Cost: 60 euro (pre-paid) 80 euro on the day.
    Duration: 4hrs

Here's are some of the topics to be covered:

    Developing a Self-Protection "Game plan"

Dealing with an unknown contact (Situational control/priority positioning).

    Understanding Street Criminals M.O

    Line ups & pre-emption

    Developing the Combative Mindset

    Explosive striking and continuous attacks

    Dealing with an ambush attack

If you are interested, or have any questions drop me a line. :)

    Cheers,

    Rob.

    Hi,

It's a bit of everything:), but it's mainly a hands on approach - much as you'd expect at a seminar.

    Cheers,

Unfortunately I have too much on at the moment. Well actually its the opposite; July will be my wind-down month I hope. Aniway I'm low on permission slips I just got one signed for Lee's seminar in Sept. Best of luck with it though Rob, sounds like it will be a good day out.

Thanks Seamus. Hope you're keeping well buddy?

It should be a good one - Lee is doing some stuff not been done over here before. ;)

Sure, I'll see you at the September seminar then!

    Take care man,

    R.

I'm on the lookout for a knife defence seminar.

I've been in two row's lately involving someone else with a knife & afterwards thought that it was only for the fact that I was stronger and fitter than the other guy that go me through, and some luck too!.

Time to equip myself with some technique now.

You Just missed the Felix Valencia knife defence seminar in Dublin this weekend. It was brilliant!!! from standup , to stalement, to defending from the ground, to mutiple attackers and thats just the first day. It was a fantastic eye opening experiencs. He was a great teacher, with simple to use techniques. I get a full report set in shortly, as Felix is doing a series of intensive training classes this week as a follow on to his seminar .

    Hey Mairt,

Sorry to hear about yer' altercations. But you must have done something right as your here to tell the tale. :) But if your looking for a counter knife solution, Lee's is the best I've seen by far. It deals with all aspects of the knife, in an easy to learn, but highly functional fashion.

It looks at the way knives are carried by scumbags - cupping, palming, thumbing, and waste band access, etc. So you can read the signs and deal with the problem before the knife is in play (which is always more preferable).

It then deals with the second phase - while the knife is being wielded.

Heres a review I wrote some time ago of Lee's "sharp edge" DVD set. it will give you an idea what going to be covered at the seminar.

This program is roughly three hours long and contains a large volume of instructional material, which is good value for money in my book. Like all UC releases, the material is top notch – the production value is good, it’s easy to follow, highly functional and contains no superfluous information. As an instructor, Lee is technically highly proficient, articulate and experienced. The instruction also uses highlights from Lee’s many workshops, which, if you haven’t been to one, are highly recommended. This footage is not only great for additional information but shows you various drills that can be used to train the UC material.

The DVD begins with an introduction to the realities of knife defense: what actually constitutes an edged weapon attack, an overview of the factors that have contributed to our modern knife-bearing culture, as well as a vast array of “soft skills”. Lee points out that when one is training in any sort of weapon defense one must understand the consequences and properties of the weapon in question. For this, Lee uses not only a personal demonstration, but graphic photos of knife wounds and various pieces of CCTV footage from real knife attacks. While these can be unpleasant to look at, they are a vital part of training, giving an insight into real street violence. Of course, Lee points out that we should escape at all costs: only in an act of desperation should anyone engage someone with a bladed weapon. In order to best understand this concept, Lee takes us through the M.O. of a modern knife wielder: how he would access or conceal the blade and then bring it into play before a potential victim realizes. One of the main concepts of Lee’s training model is that, if we can’t escape, steps should be taken to take an attacker out of the game before the knife is in play. Mindset and intention are discussed numerous times on the DVD – these are probably some of the most important concepts involved in knife defense.

The second part of the instruction deals with the knife when it is out and examines our possible options. Lee points out that if the knife is out “it’s almost too late”. Therefore taking the assailant out of the game before the knife is in play is vital in increasing chances of survival. Unfortunately, this is not always possible for a variety of reasons, as covered on the DVD. Lee demonstrates many physical cues including the way an assailant may carry a bladed weapon (cupping, palming, concealment, etc.) as well as psychological aspects such as out of the ordinary behavior. The UC counter knife principals are discussed in depth, such as “The Three E’s”, “The Training Pyramid”, “Action Pyramid” and “Action/Reaction theory”.

Concepts are sensibly broken into chunks and build in a logical progression, which makes it much easier for the student to absorb the knowledge. Following some of the initial concepts, there are a number of demonstration scenarios of possible attacks: the way the blade is employed via deception, possible carries and counters. Under these pressure tests you can really see how effective Lee’s physical material is. Also shown are concepts of the blade being employed in the street, such as the “lines of Attack”, etc. In the latter portion of the instruction, Lee employs a “damage limitation” principle, so if we can’t escape we must eliminate the threat, whilst protecting our vital targets. Lee then shows us how to “fend” (not to be mistaken for blocking) the blade from various angles and then to get in immediately and deal with the threat. The physical aspects have been kept to gross motor skills and are very effective under pressure testing.

On disk three, Counter response is dealt with along with an examination of the offensive physical tools. There is a focus on the “knees and elbows” after weapon-arm-attachment, as these are the main Close Quarter tools along with the use of forward pressure. In the first part of the physical responses, Lee isolates each tool to show how it can be used correctly. Then, when these tools are perfected, other physical skills are added such as weapon-arm-attachment, forward drive, continuous attack, snatch, etc. As with the previous DVDs in the set, the Counter Knife Principals are explained and summarized in depth after the demonstration.

Not everything goes to plan, and it’s possible to be caught off guard through an ambush attack. Lee shows us how to deal with a static knife attack where the assailant wants something from the victim. One or two effective techniques fit pretty much every situation - Lee points out that there’s no need to learn technique after technique, as trying to process them will merely slow down reaction time.

Lee includes a segment from an A&E Doctor, which outlines some immediate medial options if wounded by a knife - this was great to see on the DVD. Lee impresses on us that, even if we are stabbed, we must not give up under any circumstances. He points out that many people loose knife fights as they have defeated themselves psychologically after the first wound is inflicted.

While Lee points out hat no one system has the answer, I personally think that UC has come very close indeed. After seeing a large array of knife defense DVDs, in my opinion this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. This is a complete knife program and deals with all the major issues and ranges concerning the knife. The information is thorough and easy to grasp and wouldn’t take long to integrate into anyone’s training regime. I was lucky enough to train with Lee recently and we went over this material. Within a short space of time I was putting the UC material under pressure, and it worked very well. Lee has had quite a few “live” knife encounters so he’s in a unique position to show us how to implement such concepts. I’d highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who wants to take their self-protection training to the next level, and I feel it’s excellent value for money. So get your mitts on a copy!

If you're interested drop Jon a line as he's organizing the knife seminar in sept.

    Cheers,

    R.

    Hi Mairt,
I pm'd you a while back about the upcoming knife seminar, you may not have gotten it though.
Lee is coming to Dublin on Sept 21st for his 'On the sharp edge' counter knife seminar.
I'll bump the thread again when I find it with all the details.

If you've got any question re. the Urban Combatives system, you can always ask Lee directly. He's got his own Q&A on this new forum (which is pretty cool btw):

    Howdy'

Just wanted to say thanks to all the guys who came down on Sunday. We had a great turnout.

I think there was definitely a few "light bulb moments" going on there after the training. :)

I'd also, like to thank Lee for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come over and provide a most excellent workshop.

I'll post a full review with photos on the UC site. But I'm just too tired at the moment. :D

    Laters,

    Rob.
