    Do I need one to drive in Australia or can I just bring my Irish drivers licence?

    According to the form you can download from that site:

    For Australia:
    B Republic of Ireland EU/EEA licence accepted but
    IDP recommended

    So you should probably just get one to avoid the hassle. If you live in Dublin I'd advise you just to go into their office in Drury St. It literally takes 1 minute to get the licence.

    If you're only going to be here for a short space of time then there are no problems with using your Irish one. If you have say a year long visa then you can just use your full Irish licence to get get you one for whatever state you're in.

    I'll only be driving for a couple of weeks, only in Oz for 2 months.

    Just use your full Irish licence then. AFAIK you can use it for up to a year without changing over. That way you can't get any penalty points! ;)
