Mumbled sound when CD Drive in use

    Hi,
I used to think this was a problem with the DVD drive in that it couldn't play the sound properly from the drive and that it might be something to do with my media player/gfx card etc, but today I realised, when I was burning a CD, that when the CD drive was in use, even the sound on youtube got mumbled and stuttery. Why would this be and how could I fix it?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Is there an audio cable connected from the back of your cd/dvd drive to the mobo ? If so , disconnect it and see how you go from there ...

I think I know the one you're talking about on desktops, but mine is a laptop:o a Dell Vostro 1500 if that makes a difference :)

I don't think it always has been, but I can't be sure, maybe something I installed along the way effected it?

maybe you have the microphone turned on, try turning it off in the volume controls, could be just the noise of the drive coming through the microphones

Just had a go and it didn't make any difference :( thanks for the suggestion though!

Is there drivers for CD/DVD drives usually? Maybe I'd just need to update them?

Finally got this, I think, I hope! I updated the firmware from the dell site and fingers crossed, it will stay ok :)

Arghhh, spoke too soon :( It's happening again. It's ok when the drive has spun up it seems, but if I skip forward on a dvd or whatever, it starts to mumble the sound (and all sound from the laptop, not just the audio from the dvd). And I'm guessing the same mumbled sound will come whenever the drive is in use, like it did before, so if I'm burning a CD, audio from youtube, or anywhere will be jumpy and mumbled :(

    Any ideas so? :o

Ok.... this time... I hope... it stays ok!

    I did this: http://xmixahlx.com/oldsites/soniccompression/dma.html

Had to restart, don't think it worked, can't remember, so I uninstalled each primary drive (I have two primarys, no secondary for some reason) and then rebooted, then I think I had to reboot again. They were set to DMA and now... I get stutter free playback. I just hope it lasts!

Edit: By the way, I think if the DVD drive gets too many read errors (say playing or ripping a badly scratched CD) it will go into this PIO mode, so that's probably what happened me because it was fine when I first got my laptop.
