Thinking of buying a Nikon D60 - Advices required

    Hi,

I am looking to buy a new camera, my budget is approx 500-600€ and was thinking to get a Nikon D60. I wonder if anybody here has bought this camera before and how do you find it? Also where did you buy it? I am of course looking for some good offer, but at the same time I would like some assurance to get support in case of problem with the camera within the warranty period.

I found some good prices in US websites but I am not sure whether there is some extra import tax or vat that I need to pay when I receive the product. Is it better to stick to an Irish/UK website instead? What would you recommend?

Any tip/advice is more than welcome! Thank you in advance! :)

I'm looking at the same one, kea photo (FAQ - Where to buy a camera) do it for around 400 ex shipping. Seems like a decent camera, I've never owned a digital so I'm hoping its ok. Make sure it comes with the VR kit lens, I have seen the D60 offered with non-vr 18-55, and its only about €10 more. Camera labs have an extensive review and video tour.

Bermingham cameras are offering it for €649 (before €75 cashback from Nikon

Thank you very much for your reply! :)

Would you know how the 75€ cash back from Nikon works? Is it referred to this this "**When you buy a Digital SLR from us we will do your first full sensor clean FREE of charge. We will also clean the dust from the sensor every time it is required**" or is an extra 75€ cash back?

I also found one for 515€ here
They also give 60£ Cash back - What do you think? Is it a good camera?

Thank you again for your help. :)

Be careful buying Nikon gear from outside the EU - in my experience they won't honour the warranty. Bought my D50 in B&H in NY but I was there in person. I find buying stuff from the US via mail order is not worth the effort. You're very likley to end up paying a fortune for shipping and then getting stung for VAT.

Thanks Stephen - appreciate the advice. I am currently looking through European (possible Irish or UK) websites - want to make sure the warranty covers me in case of problems.

I got the D60 VR from dabs.ie looks like there's cheaper around. I get computer stuff there, so was happy to do business with them.

While it's my first DSLR I can't get over how much better it is then a normal Digital Camera.

I bought a D60 back in May, have to say I am very happy with it – it my first DSLR so I have no other experiences to compare against. I have had no problems with the camera and I have found it very easy to use the different functions.

Got mine in Derry, while up for a few days break, not as cheap as some Internet offers but it was a good bit cheaper than prices down south (with the current exchange rates).

Have yet to get my cashback, put in for it few weeks back, not sure how long it is supposed to take???

10MP is probably more than will ever be needed, but the thought I had is I might as well have it than not, also as it is a newer camera so it has more up to data image processing technology (should be a good thing??)

Got mine today, its excellent! Function and performance aside (which I'm really happy with), it feels great in your hand, buttons within easy reach, intuitive menu. And the tilting display is going to come in handy.

Particularly like the in-camera raw editing, not too impressed with some of the wb settings but I'm just getting used to it. Very impressed with the first results

Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Here's their Reseller Ratings bit.

If it's too good to be true and all that...

    Thank you so much!

One question around Kea Photo (via ebay) - they have great feedbacks on ebay and they are shipping from Hong Kong - did any of you buy from them? Any hidden taxes I should expect to pay if I order from them?

Thank you again for your help!

Kea Photo are highly regarded by people here :) I've bought stuff from them but only small things. Cameras are exempt from import duty afaik, but lenses are not. You're still liable for VAT on the camera at 21% of the total price including shipping. Whether you get stung for VAT or not is pretty much down to the luck of the draw. You'll probably still pay a lot less in the end anyway.

I bought the D300 recently and a couple of lenses over the last year or two from KEA and I've never had any problems. Good service and better prices:). Highly recommend them

Great! Did you pay VAT on it (as Stephen mentioned) ? I read on their ebay site that they are ok to stick a "gift" label on the product to avoid the buyer to pay VAT charges...can you confirm that this is the case?

Thanks in advance to you and all who answered :)

There'll be no discussion of how to avoid paying tax on yer gear here :)

I didn't pay any import duty / tax / VAT etc.. but from what I've read here previously its a chance you take. You could be unlucky if its seized at customs and end up paying extra. But the additional amount you pay will just bring the cost up to what you would have paid here afaik

hmm, surprised to hear this because I bought a lens in B&H in NY and the damn thing stopped working after 3 months (AF motor dead!) so i contacted Nikon UK and I sent it off to them with a photocopy of the original sales receipt (which was badly faded from being in my wallet the whole time, and I also stupidly threw away the original warranty card ). I attached a letter outlining this and they fixed it no bother and no cost.

I heard from someone else also that Nikon are pretty good for fixing something within warranty at your local repair centre despite where you made the purchase (gray products may be different!), as long as you can provide proof of purchase.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but I have just bought a Nikon D-60 in Singapore.

I got the lot for approx 700euro that includes, a filter, wide-angle lens, a 5200mAh battery, a 4gb memory card and a case. I was assured by the seller that it would have cost me at least a grand for everything in ireland.. Was I ripped off??

Just to let ye know I bought the D60 Vr kit from Conns for 599 + €80 cashback. I also registered for the free SLR training that Nikon are providind for people who buy the D60. I thought it was fiar enough, and will have no warranty issues in the future!

Depends on the Lens really. All the other stuff excluding the camera aren't that dear.
