Reynolds and Major to get freedom of Cork city

Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds and former British prime minister John Major are to be awarded the freedom of Cork city this afternoon.

The decision to honour the two men was made because of their combined contribution to the peace process in the North.

It hasn't been welcomed by everyone, however, with some local Labour, Sinn Féin and Socialist Party councillors voting against it.

Previous recipients of the freedom of Cork city include Eamonn de Valera, John F Kennedy, Roy Keane and Michael Flatley.

I was working in City Hall yesterday, the place was full of security guards and they forced me to make major detours around the hall so I could get around. Who would be bothered to attack John Major? There were a couple of hecklers and that was the height of it.

I think it was fair enough for them to get recognised for their work in the Peace Process, John Major wasn't the worst of them at the end of the day.
