Footwear for Thailand

    Hi all,

I'm travelling to Thailand for 6 weeks in August and plan on following the usual itinerary i.e. bangkok for a few days, northern thailand, then down to the islands. Do i need to bring hiking runners or will normal runners suffice? If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations that'd be great... i suppose anything light-weight would be ideal as Thailand is our 1st stop on a 12 month RTW.

    Cheers :)

Well what do you aim to be doing. Are you comfortable with less than salubrious toilets / not so clean streets / etc?

You could arguably wear sandals / flip flops all the time.

As I would for any serious walking (Jungle trekking up north), I recommend something comfortable, breathable and rugged but its up to you, not strictly necessary.

crocs could be your best bet...if u do a jungle trek you will be passing through rives so you'll destroy runners...

Well, definitely intend on doing some trekking up north but that'll probably be the sum total of the hiking aspect of the trip. Have been looking at Northface hiking runners online so they seem like a good bet, must do some more research though. Will also take terencemc's suggestion about the crocs. Thanks a million :)

FYI You may not wish to leave it but I picked up a great pair of North Face in Bangkok last month for about 40 squid. (And yes they were the real deal!).

Hiking runners would be good for the trek but otherwise you're going to need sandals in Thailand, its just too warm to be wearing runners and socks all the time.

You can pick up fake Crocs in the Khao San Road for less than 5 euro, you could also get a pair of hiking runners pretty cheap there which might be a good thing if you are going to be wading rivers in them.
