    Hi ,
I have been wondering which extender to get ?
    the 1.4x or 2x , I have the 70-200 L F2.8 IS

So i think 2x is good, 400mm at f5.6 is still very respectable ??

I will be using it for animals and sports shots ?

I have the 1.4 on my 70-200mm f2.8, happy with the results I get.

The 2x hasn't got great review at all.

In a recent thread, Paul was testing both of these.

I read up stacks on these extenders before plumping for the 1.4, the x2 got so so reviews.
Having said that the lens you have is also meant to work quite well with the extenders as it's so sharp.

I have both the Canon 1.4x TC and the Canon 2x TC. I tried both out recently to compare.

The 1.4x TC will certainly get plenty of use. I used it on my 300mm f/2.8, giving me 420mm f/4. It was great.

The 2x TC gives me f/5.6 and it much slower to focus.

I'd certainly recommend the 1.4x TC but only use the 2x TC when you have plenty of light and the subject isn't moving fast.

    1.4x ... that will only give 280mm though ...

    ok at f4 ... but .... hmmmm .. haaawww...

    i dunno ...

You do have to make your own mind up. The distance is better with the 2x TC but, you also have to consider the 2 stops. f/5.6 is much slower.

After using the 1.4x TC, I think now, the 2x TC will get even less use.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel (eos 400d) with kit lens and a Sigma 70-300 apo macro zoom. Would an extender be of use, please?

And if so, are the ones recommended here suitable?

I don't think the extender works with either lens you have.

AFAIK the extenders only work with Canon L class lenses ..

I have the Canon 70-300 IS USM f4-5.6 and it won't work with that one ...

    just the 70-200 f2.8 L ...

According to Canon - Fits all 135mm or longer fixed focal length lenses and some 70-200mm telephoto lenses. So, as far as I know, the lenses do have to be L, since the 70-200mm is L (don't think they make non-L 70-200mm).

All the other fixed focal length lenses above 135mm are certainly L.

I have a loan of a 2x and the kite surfing shot in the Triathlon thread is taken with it. Not too bad but I needed a tripod or monopod to hold her steady at 600mm

I'm bumping this thread because I have never used an extender and would be interested to see if is worth trying.

    What are the advantages?

Would it be just as useful to buy new lenses and not have problems with focusing.

Has anybody got examples of photos that show how extenders make good shots, please?

i have a 1.4 convertor and i really dont like it

it softens the images and slows the autofocus

Examples of images taken with the 1.4x TC here.

    Advantage - extra reach
Disadvantages - 1 stop lost, slightly slower AF, can soften image depending on camera/lens you use.

Personally, my Canon 1.4x TC gets a good bit of use. My Canon 2x TC gets almost none.

I use a 2x on my Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 - there are some photos here. All the bird and sport shots on the first page in my flickr are taken with the 2x on the above lens. With a little work in Photoshop, I can rescue some of the softer images (but not all). I agree AF is a lot slower though.

    Will be getting a 1.4x and a 300mm f/2.8 very soon.
