Hi, I have a 3G phone on the three network, does anyone know if i can use this for broadband on my laptop using a data cable? With the right files installed, i'm sure it's possible? Would probably have to configure the application somehow to recognize the modem!

I have a 3g phone on the 3 network and I use my phone to connect my laptop to the internet all the time. Its a Nokia N73 and I am on the x-series package.

Officially, I am not sure if this is actually allowed. There is a data quota per month to stop people taking the mick.

I've done the same with a nokia e61 & moto v3xx so it depends really on the phone (manufacturer)'s support for this function.
    What model do you have?

For most phones, just install the software suite that came with the phone onto your pc. Once its installed, connect your phone to your pc via data-cable/bluetooth and launch the software suite. You should see an application to connect to the internet.

I know with the Nokia PC Suite, you just hit the Internet button and it auto connects in like 5 seconds. I would suggest checking your mobile providers costs regarding data, as it can be fairly pricey! Also, make sure you have your providers data settings configured on your phone prior to starting.

    Hope this answers your question.

It's a SE K530i, ya downloading the PC suite will probably work alright but will it have the same connection speed as a 3G modem?

Yep. Uses the same technology as far as I know. As long as you are connecting to a 3G enabled broadcast tower, you should be fine :D

Just remember there's a difference between 3G and HSDPA.

3G is up to around 300 kb/sec, HSDPA is usually up to 3600 kb/sec.

You will get up to whatever speed your phone is capable of, depending of course on the number of users in your area.
