Lads recently my XPS M1330 has been trying to download an update for Windows automatically but it never installs correctly and has tried to several times at this stage.

At the end of the process when it shuts down and restarts it tells me that the installation failed and that it was reverting settings back.

    Anyone else get this?

Have an M1330 and no problems.

Go to windows update and check the update history to see what update it is.

Then delete whatever one it is from the staging area in c:\windows

    Sounds like a corrupt download.

Is it trying to install SP3?

It may be....not sure really because it seems to be a bigger update than usual though as far as I remember SP3 was installed on this a few weeks ago.

Sherifu, can you tell me how to delete the files from C: as I can't seem to do it through Windows Update.

Thanks for ye're help, I do appreciate it.

Here's a typical detail of the failed files in question:
    ***********************************************************
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB950759)

    Installation date: ‎20/‎06/‎2008 12:28

    Update type: Important

I had a problem a while ago with a few updates that wouldn't install. The way I fixed it in the end was to delete everything in the "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution" folder. You need to disable the windows update service first as it will be locking those files.

It's method 10 in this article:

Aye, SoftwareDistribution. That's the one I was angling after.

Going to give that a try there now thanks.

Well I've tried all that was uggested here folks but nothing seems to work and it still installs the updates at shut down and when the PC is fired up again it tries to "configure" the updates but fails to do so and goes into "reverting changes" before I can even put in my password.

    Getting irritating at this stage...

    Any more ideas?

(Sorry for booting this thread back up the pile)

    Re-install?

    dont go to that extreme.

Well you can spend unlimited time searching for another solution or just 2hours or so doing a reinstall, know which route I'd take. Of course none of my important stuff is on my everyday computer, all that is on the network and on externals so reinstalling means no loss of data.

Does Vista  have a safe mode?

It does as far as I know.

Would it be true to say that when new updates come out they will automatically just bypass whatever problem is going on here and once those new ones are installed all will be right with the world?

It would really depend on the source of the problem. To be on the safe side of things I'd tend to think no.

Did you manage to get it sorted Fabio?
