Hi folks - do you tip the delivery guy?

I do if they are nice.
If they're unpleasant or pointedly unhelpful I don't. I remember one guy tipped over an entire crate of messages on my floor from waist height because he was in a hurry. It was lucky that seriously bruised apples were the only casulty because there were several jars in the crate. I don't tip him
For the most part they are lovely guys though. They never seem to expect a tip or hang around in a "hint hint" kind of way.

I wouldn't - any less than a fiver would seem like an insult - any more and you've almost doubled the delivery charge.
It might be a good idea though if the same driver always came - it might make him/her try to get to you on time?

Yup,I agree that it's difficult to get the sum right but if 10 people gave you 3euro a day that'd add around E180 a to your weekly earnings.Personally I wouldn't be too insulted by that.

Cheers for the feedback - I think 2 - 3 euro may be the way to go. As you say on its own it may seem like an insult but if everyone gave that it would add up over a week

I come from the land where tipping is pretty much required (US) yet I wouldn't think of tipping a Tesco delivery guy. You already pay a fee to have it delivered and I think that is quite sufficient.

i gave up using there service. it cost me too much as i would keep adding stuff to the basket. delivery charges were crazy at the times that suited me friday and saturday. they were always about 2 hours late. lots of goods damaged. some goods were substitued and were not what i wanted. i now use supervalu who are free for delivery. they are great value and put in special offers that i like. couldnt recommend them enough. they some every friday at 12 on the dot.

We dont use them that often but when we do they have always been on time, never had any damaged items, and we always get any special offers. They have on occasion substituted some items but you can reject those if you are not happy.

    No, this isn't the States.

When I used them I paid by Laser on the site so the payment is already taken care of. So no.

I was wondering this myself too recently. I can't decide because they are always very nice and helpful, but delivery can be as much four euro, so I can't decide if it's warranted.

It can be a lot more than that.

This would be more like tipping a DHL man rather than a Chinese takeaway driver.

In the case of small takeaways often they are working outside of the tax system, i.e. not getting minimum wage. You might not agree with this but it does go on. So you could refuse to tip and if they complained you could argue they should not have taken on a job without a decent wage, their employer should be paying this money if they deserve it. So many do not know if the driver is already getting a fair wage, in which case they might not tip. In the US it is pretty much taken for granted that most "tippable staff" are not paid a fair wage and do depend on tips.

Tesco & DHL are going to follow the labour laws, so there is no real need to be tipping, no more than the checkout girl or shelf stackers in tesco.

Some takeaway drivers might be on the min wage to keep above board, but might be expected to fuel & run their own car expenses, this would obviously not be the case in tesco.

It actually never occured to me. It's funny, we tip some services, but not others. Like we tip the waiters, pizza delivery guy, the hairdresser. Yet we don't tip our GP, the UPS delivery man or the girl at the checkout.

To answer OP's question, I don't tip the driver because I already paid for delivery, like I wouldn't tip a waiter if the restaurant charges me 15% service. However, I offer a cup of tea or some biscuits, above all when the weather is bad. I prefer the delivery service from Superquinn, the men are always very helpful. I stopped ordering from Tesco online because I had to spend more time on the phone getting their errors fixed than I would have spent doing the shopping myself. Plus, when I just had had a baby, I went down with him to open the door and the man was the most unhelpful, just dropping my bags at the front door of our apartment block. The following week, I ordered from SQ and the man helped me carry my stuff upstairs, even when I told him he didn't have to

The tesco delivery drivers are not allowed to accept tips, as in money. They are also supposed to put the shopping where you ask them to put it, within reason, ie the kitchen table. The deliery charge can be between 2.50 and 7.50, the driver has no idea how much you paid unless they read your receipt.
