    Hello all,

I have recently booked a gap year trip to thailand, Oz, New Zealand , USA then home. My question is what is the best way to handle my cash before
I head off. what form did you carry your money over there? Did you change much cash before you went? Is a credit card important/essential?

I have X amount that i know im going to spend. Do I stick all of this on my credit card? Does our Laser cards work over there?

I know im going to be working for a while, did any of you set up a bank account over there? Any hassle with this?

Then I want to put a few grand to the side if case Im really stuck.. but basically I dont want to touch it. I know if I did put it on a credit card or put it along with my spending money im going to wax it. Leave it in Irish bank account and use wire transfer?

Any suggestions from your experience would be grateful
    Thanks in advance!!

howdy, when I was in Australia I used travellers checks. v handy, went to the american express office on Pitt St (v. central) every couple of days to change a few. good security-wise, and could help you budgetting perhaps. Hope this helps, and good luck on your trip :)

I just used my Irish bank account. Laser cards will work in ATM in the majority of countries they definitly work in Australia, NZ, and the US. Mine did work in Thailand to but rememeber depending where you go there might not be an ATM. To help budget I just withdrew a certain amount every week paid my rent bought my shoppping first so I knew I could sleep and eat for the week and then whatever was left was my spending money. Obviously took out more when doing certain activities. Take some cash and maybe some travelers cheques to start off with so you have money when you arrive for accom or whatever.

Check with you bank what kind of charges you will incur when withdrawing cash from an overseas bank. Some have a set fee some work off a percentage. You may consder changing banks to get a better deal, I think I seen an add for Halifax where they dont charge you at all.

Would it not be a good idea to use a credit card for the likes of renting a car (most companies require a credit card number) and for booking hotels in advance?
