i have found a site that gives altered firmware for canon cameras to grant them higher spec's than on their specsheet.( cant publish the url here for fear that its against boards regulations).

unfortunately the firmware does nothing for the 400D. is there anyone who knows if its possible to alter the 400D firmware to give live view? id kill for this feature, but cant spring for a 450D.

this is not an answer to your question but would not that breaks the warranty? on the other hand, i don't see much use of liveview for myself as i rather enjoy shooting using viewfinder unless under certain circumstances i need to.

check there's other thread about liveview on 30D (which it doesn't have)...

There's no hope of you getting Liveview on the 400D. What would you want it for anyway?

focusing. in astrophotography, stars are just a tiny white spot in the viewfinder. it would be easier to focus using the larger screen on the back of the camera. there are workarounds for this, but i would like to keep things simple and use in-camera solutions.

also, from using compacts, the histogram displayed before taking an image is very useful, but alas not on the 400D, and i think it comes with liveview.

I understand your pain. But i have to say i don't think having had my 400d for over a year that i could go back to live view. much prefer the viewfinder now.
