    Hi all,

Could someone tell me how to achieve the effect where the background of an image is turned to black and white and the object in the front keeps the color.

I've seen this done loads on the photo forum.

eg. Picture of an orange.....the background is B&W but the orange still has full color.

    Is it hard to do?

    What software are you using?
    Google 'selective colouring'. Example: http://www.photos-of-the-year.com/articles/colors/

Hi just wondering if I can do the same with GIMP? ie, a shot of a flower... leaving the flower in colour and making the background black and white?? Thanks! !

Its much the same process with the GIMP but it's been awhile since I've done it with the GIMP. I'm not sure if it uses masks like photoshop but its easy using a selection of the object you want in colour, inverting it and then desaturating.

If photoshop i select the part using lasso then copy to new layer (turn off original layer visibility)go round the edge with a fine araser to get rid of any background. Then click the original adjust hue/saturation to your liking and merge and save
    did this earlier

if you had selected a new layer/convert b&w/select layer mask/ and brushed out the b&w would be a little easier I thought.
