    Hi guy's,

I am looking at putting a rig together that will be able to play WAR, Dawn of war 2, colonial marines.. when they come out. hopefully at 1920x1200

I am getting the 4850 until the 4870x2 come out and then giving my brother the 4850 and buying 2 4870x2's for crossfire.

I have put the following bits together and I have the rest. CPU, monitor, case, psu, etc...

I am still slighty concerned with getting vista 64bit, but from what i have read, it is very usable now and will play most games no problem. Compatiblity is my biggest concern??

    Any feedback would be great,

    Asus Rampage Formula, X48, Socket-775, DDR2,ATX,2xGbLAN,Firew, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x16 € 229.00

ASUS Silent Knight II CPU Cooler, Blue Light, Socket 478/775/939/940/AM2/AM2+ € 54.00

    OCZ DDR2 PC6400 4GB KIT, Reaper X HPC, 2x2048MB, Heat Pipe, (CL4-4-3-15), E.P.P € 122.00

    Plextor DVD±RW burner, PX-810SA, SATA, 18x, 10x Dual, DVD-RAM, Black € 59.00

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM € 44.00
    Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA2 32MB 7200RPM € 125.01

    Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDMI/HDCP, Lite-R € 175.00

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Eng SP1 OEM DVD 64bit € 93.00

Money is not a huge concern, but I know I don't have to spend a fortune to make a good PC.

And I am not really an OC'er but I might bring my chip up to 3.6Ghz, some time in the future

    Where you buying?

Not sure about Crossfire on these new cards, most in the know say you will need a very good 16x16x ( X48 board ) for them to work properly, some of the reviews so far show p35 boards being up to 50% slower.

It seems like Ati's solution is much less consistent and reliable than Nvidia's.

    Have a look here

I agree 2 x HD4870 or 2 x HD4850 seem like great deals but the review also shows that Xfire only works (at all!!) in about 50% of games, so I do not see why it is so great.

Your going to need a €170 motherboard to get them going properly, while a €70 sli board works perfectly with all nvidia cards.

    2 x 8800gt for €220 matches/ out performs 2 x HD4850 in most games and is much more consistent.

I would be building something like this, if I was going to get a new pc

8800gt in sli is basically a 9800gx2 which is a killer card, it will be more than enough for the games you listed.

Motherboard isnt the greatest overclocker, but it will reach a bit over 3ghz with that cooler no prob.

Get the 4870x2's there a far better card.
And that ram posted is not really that good compared to 1.8voltage ram. ie

    Thats far better.

There are no benchmarks of the HD4870X2 yet, who knows what it'll be like and thats a 2x1GB kit of ram

I was stating a point 1.8volts is better ram .
Obviously the 4850 is on par with the 9800whateveritscalled so common sense should prevail.

Does 1.8V make it better ram? No. They're 2Gb sticks
OCZ have a lifetime warranty, have tighter timings and would overclock better if thats what he's intending. Also motherboards handle 2x2gb kits better than 4x1.

    Thats what I thought.

As for the GFX card stuff, I just want to overkill now so I won't be updating for 2-3 years. I did this with my x1900xtx and I'm only changing it now.

Any experiences with hardware compatiblity from the list i supplied and any driver issues with 64bit vista?

I'm running 64bit Vista here with absolutely no issues. There were loads at first when i tried it 6 months ago but not now. 64bit is well supported now

Check out this thread where I decided on a HD4870 myself as I've been waiting on an upgrade a long time. Choice of gpu depends on what resolution you game at. I game at 1920x1200, bought a 24" monitor 3 months ago and been needing a gpu to run it.

Good man, I'll follow you closely, I've been gaming on a 24'(1920x1200) for a while now, and until recently my x1900xtx was doing the job, but AOC and Bioshock started to show its limits.

thats why I want to overkill when the new cards come out.
