Why are some members of clubs such snobs?

I was out playing a round tonight. All going well until the 6th hole, coming up behind was a competition so one of the ladies driving around changing falgs for a tournament tomorrow asked us to skip a hole and comeback to it on the final few holes instead of letting a few hours of a comp play through us.
Thats grand I said, went off and by the time we were on the last few holes we were about 3-4 holes ahead of the comp, so instead of going on we walked a few yards onto the 6th tee box when two men approach us off the 5th green.

We told them to play on ahead and they asked where we came from.
Now I was puzzled so said "Excuse me??".

    The conversation went like this:

THEM: "What hole did you last play?"

US: "That one there, go on and play ahead."

THEM: "Are you guys members here?"

    US: "No"

THEM: "Well we are the last X amount of years and your breaking the rules!"

    US: "How?"

THEM: "Well you can't just skip a hole and come back to it whenever you feel like it"

US: "Okay thats fine, go on head we will just play our last few and come back"

THEM to ME: "Oh and by the way, jeans are against the rules of our club."

ME: "Sorry but i've only being playing golf for about 2 and a half months and not too sure about joining the club and keep on playing golfing"

THEM: "OH well you shouldn't be here"

So I lost the head and walked off because I was having my best round to date and wanted to have the full 18 on the card to make sure it was my best. I couldn't believe they would eat into someone like that it was unreal.

Should these people not be trying to help beginners along and show the club off in a good light rather than have a go at them??

A putter into the kneecap might have sorted him out.

I had a similar experience dont want to go into it now becuase it will bring back those angry feelings again!

I think you were unfortunate enough to run into what would represent a very small group of people who are like this. If you explained the situation you were in the vast majority of members wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

I'd put it down as one bad experience, don't let it stop you or put you off playing further golf

Firstly, you should have been told no jeans permitted when you were in the club house, so if they didn't tell you, and there were no signs up, and you're new to the game, how were you to know ! not your fault.

I would have reported the other two players as well, some people think they're just of higher importance, ridiculous carry on.

I can understand no jeans on a course alright but what annoys me is:

1: When I was starting golf I was speaking to a few people that are members and work in the pro shop and they said it was okay to play in jeans until I decided to keep the game up. (Noone has ever said anything about them not even the ranger when I was talking to him on the course).

2: When I was walking back to the club house last night there were women wearing jeans/tracksuit bottons. And blokes weraing jeans/tracksuit bottoms etc and they were members.

I really did want to ram the driver where the sun don't shine but said I would leave it because they weren't worth it.

Very bad form on their parts but in fairness to golfers in general these clowns tend to be like that no matter where they are and what they are doing.

I can see why they might have posed the question but there was no excuse for the attitude shown by them.

Better off ignoring or just laughing at them....

Thats sort of what I done, when they realised I was really thick they said we could play the hole with them so we decided to. They shot 6/7 and I finished it in 5. It was an index 1 and they couldn't believe how well I hit the ball. :D

If I'm reading the OP right, I think you only have yourself to blame for this. If someone tried to cut in front of you in an ATM queue, you would be rightly annoyed and call them on it. Were they supposed to wait quietly while you tee off, walk to your ball and hit your second shots!!!
If you had explained why you were trying to cut in in front of them, I'm sure that they would have been fine with it, instead you were deliberately obtuse.

Sorry but I told them why we came back to the hole and we told them that they could go ahead of us rather than waiting to go after us. The told us that it was against the rules of golf to jump a hole like that.
Now if that was the case most of the members of this club would be playing against the rules as they all jump holes if its busy etc.

It's generally acceptable as long as you don't hinder anyone else in doing. Doesn't sound like you did do so don't worry about it. There are certain people in all golf clubs who like to be like this.

i had something very simular during the week, i have been playing golf a long time and am a member in two clubs. you just get that with soe members, they feel as they are there as long as they are they can bully people on the course.

lets just say the guys who challenged me during the week didnt finish his round, i am very cool when it comes to heated situations but this man needed to go in for his own safety, something i detest is bad manners. so if your in jeans and hacking up the course its irrelevant, manners cost nothing

Ha ha!! Well hopefully it was a one off incident.

I wouldn't mind if I was hacking the course up but I play quiet well actually.

    Scored a 101.

Not bad for only playing about 2 and a half months.
Started on the first with a 30 odd foot putt from off the green for par.

Lads I am not going to name the course as it could get me and boards into trouble. ;)

Oh I had plenty more than that on my mind when it happened.
Well alot of private clubs require some form of dress codes etc.

I walked away because I could have ended up in severe trouble and to be honest it wasn't worth it to do anything other than play golf.

In my experience golfers are among the friendliest and most welcoming bunch of people you will find. However, there will always be a few ignorant people, just like in any diverse group. From working in a golf shop semi-full time for the past eight years, I feel like I have met all of the snobs at this stage! :D

I thought you played the last few holes with the guys, or did you actually walk away?

I played that one hole (6th) with them and then finished off the 17th/18th with our group.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, thanks for clarifing that, I don't see how they could have had a problem with your situation, unless you were in a comp, and even then it's just nitpicking.

Playing Golf a fair while - happy to say that guys like those you met are very much in the minority.

However "cutting in" is very annoying and you will be challenged on it - the jeans wouldn't have helped as these can be like a "Blue rag" to some people !

Thes people wern'y snobbish just bad mannered - but having said that some form of dress code is desirable in Golf - if you doubt that just pay a visit to Deer Park GC on a Bank Holiday week end !!!

Polo shirt and combats ?? Wow ! The old Chinos might have been a better choice .

    Happy golfing :D
