What would you consider a deepstack poker event? My local club is starting new tournys and have one advertised as a deepstack, 10,000 starting with 2,000 early bird. blinds start 50 100, 100 200, and so on. 18 or 20 min clock. €50 buy in freezeout

Whenever it's difficult to get your whole stack in the middle over four streets, it's deepstack.

Your local club are either clueless or devious, I'm leaning towards the former.

With a 10k starting stack, blinds should start at 25/50 atleast and not doubling everytime blinds go up, thats just retarded.

What would you consider a long piece of string? My local Woodies has started selling string and they have one advertised as "long", it is 50m long and made of cotton. However I feel customers are getting shortchanged as mountaineers who climb Mount Everest use ropes of up to 200m long and made of nylon which is much stronger! No wonder Ireland hasn't produced any good mountaineers. Can you imagine Sir Ranulph Fiennes making do with this piece of string from Woodies?

Sadly our DIY stores are too short-sighted to see this and the customers don't know any better so there is no pressure on them to provide really long strings made out of a decent quality material.

I'm leaning towards "his club" being Atari Expo in the square

    Club of the year IMO

:eek:The little thumb of rule i use is that i basically divide the starting stack by 100 and then compare the reuslts to a base value of 100. Then follow the following results:

    (1) If answer < (less than) 100, tourney is crapshoot/shortstack/badvalue.

    (2) If answer = 100, its too close to call, ie my system doesnt work.

    (3) If anser > (greater than) 100, tourney is deepstaked so sit back and relax and wait for a big hand

So in your case (10,000/100 = 100) my rule doesnt really work so i cant really comment, sorry:D:D:D

Anything over 500 is very deepstack, (ie the GJP deepstack ME:eek:)

Your system makes absolutely no sense. By your calculations if I give you 20000 chip starting stack its deep stacked! But what happends if the blinds start at 1000-2000, thats not deepstacked to me!

By the same token say i give you 5000 chips then its bad value by your calcs but if the blinds start at 1-2 then its uber deep stacked to me!

The only way really to determine what Deepstacked means is to compare the starting stack to the starting blinds and to the blind progression.

Lets take a 5k starting stack with the blinds starting at 25-50. This gives a stack:big blind ratio of 100:1. This may or may not be a deep stack event.
If the blinds were to go something like: 25-50, 50-100, 100-200, 200-400, 400-800. Then its not deep stacked. However if the blinds go 25-50, 50-100, 75-150, 100-200, 150-300, 200-400, 300-600, 400-800 then it would be deep stacked.

Of course the length of the levels also needs to be considered. Even with a stack: big blind ratio of say 300:1 if the blinds go up every 10min then it will be a crap shot, however if you have something like a ratio 60:1 but with 1hr levels its much better although still not a brilliant tourney.

As has been said before asking what defines "A Deepstack tourney" is like asking how long is a piece of string!

    Regards
    Ian

Jeez, relax. I never said i was defo right or that you had to use it.
All i said was this was the system i use when deciding which tournys to play and it hasnt failed me so far.:p

By the way ' I didnt do it', my formulae should only be used for live tournys, have a different system for online tournys. Basically it differs from the fact that starting stacks are samller online due to more hands/hour.:cool:

PM if you are interested to learn more. Im afraid Donkey may take it personally again:rolleyes::(
