I am considering buying a first gen iphone off my mate. He is selling it at a reasonable price but was wondering is it worth it or I should I wait for the 3G iphone. I mean I don't use the mobile Internet a lot only to get soccer results so the 3G aspect does not bother me and i don't have a car so the built in gps won't be much good. Is there any other features on the 3G iphone that make it stand out compared to the original?

WAIT & Don't buy the first Gen iphone from your mate unless he's giving it to you for next to nothing!

According to O2 you'll be able to get the iphone 3G from €49 euro. Its just common sense for you to wait untill the 11th of July and pick up the 3G version for less the price i suspect your mate was going to sell you the "legacy model" for. The wait will be worth having the 3G speeds and all them little extra's regardless if you use them or not.

Check out this link for the iphone 3G price in relation to your preferred price plan.

The battery life on the new one's much better apparently. Would make sense to get the 1st gen if you're on Meteor, it only has EDGE speeds till the end of the year.

Unless you're already officially on O2 then I would say yes it is worth buying one at the right price(Indeed I have done).

If you want a cracked 3G iphone to run on other networks, you will be likely a while waiting for one. While the software/hardware will be opened up by third parties in short order(the SDK 2.0 was cracked in a matter of hours), the new activation plan in the US for the 3G iPhone will decimate the numbers available on internet buying sites. Apple and more to the point AT&T learned from their mistakes with the iphone 1.0. So cheapy iPhones from the states will be a thing of the past for the most part. So that leaves the odd one showing up through dubious channels and ones from countries where sim free iPhones are available.

When they do show up in those countries, they'll be pricey too. The much vaunted 199.00 price is the subsidised price. Think more along the lines of the 500 quid mark and up as a sim free option in the few countries where that's an option. Add in rarity and you can likely add in a few quid on top of that.

In any case the 3G phone is more a slight update than anything else. 3G and GPS is the only diff. Now they're a welcome update and no mistake, but 3G is the real selling point. Otherwise the 3G iphone hasexactly the same main processor, same ram/storage, same camera. The battery is supposed to be better, but the increased battery time is with 3G switched off. With it on early reports have it with much the same or less battery time. They dropped the metal back and replaced it with plastic(they say for better reception, but I suspect costs where as big a consideration). Personally unless 3G is something you would consider stumping up big money for and have the real need for it's simply not worth it. Now when the iphone 3 comes out....

IMHO and I could be way off here, but I'm suspecting that the first gen iphone may start to actually go up in price not down until numbers of unlocked 3G iphones start to show up. It'll be interesting to see where it does go.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

The €49 price point is if you take out the €100 a month subscription.

To say the iPhone is only €49 is quite misleading.

As Wibbs says, the only difference is 3G and GPS. I personally would have no use for either, so I am happy to stay with my 1st generation iPhone. EDGE speeds do me just fine.

Thanks for the replies guys. The iphone is unlocked so I will be using this on a Pay as you go sim card and being in college I don't really want to splash out €45 quid a month on a bill if I was to opt for the 3G iphone

If you are only going to be using it to look at results then 3G is of little use to you. You just want to be careful as it's easy run up large data usage with the email, weather and other downloaded apps that use online services.
