    Whatever about helping haliers, I think fuel price reductions and / or rebates are the wrong way to go about it. they need to get used to higher proces and need to be more efficient fuelwise.

    Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has met with road hauliers to discuss rising fuel prices.

    The Irish Road Haulage Association say it is happy with the reception it received from the Minister at this afternoon's meeting.

    The IRHA said it felt it got a 'fair hearing' from Mr Dempsey during the meeting at which the association raised its concerns for the Irish economy because of the soaring cost of petrol and diesel.

    AdvertisementPresident of the IRHA Jimmy Quinn said the Association put a number of proposals to the Minister during the meeting including a cut in excise duty on fuel.

    The Association asked the Minister to respond to those demands by next Tuesday evening, in time for a meeting of the IRHA membership on Wednesday.

    Mr Quinn said the Association would await the Ministers response before deciding whether to proceed with proposals for a nationwide blockade to highlight their grievances.

    Hauliers say they can no longer absorb the extra cost of fuel and said the industry was facing a crisis not seen since the 1970s.

    A survey released by AA Ireland earlier this week showed that the average price of petrol is now €1.305 a litre, up 6.6% since May.

    And it showed the price of diesel rising at an even faster rate. The average price is now €1.429, up 10.5% in the same period.
