Travelling to Australia by working on a boat

    Hi,
Me and my friend are going travelling for a year around october. The plan is to start somewhere in South-East Asia, then Australia for a few months working, then NewZealand and hopefully South America.

We dont want to take the usual route of getting flights, we want to work ourway there by boat, (cargo ship, cruise ship or yacht). This way we'd save about a grand on flights, and also make money, doesnt matter if its very little as itd be a great experience anyway.

So has anyone ever tried this before, or even looked into it, and if you have, whats your advice etc?

Ive sailed the Atlantic on a yacht and wanted to do the spin from Indo to Aus but found that there is a distinct lack of yachts going that direction.

In any event you won't save money over flying by going this route. Yacht owners will typically expect a contribution of between 20 and 40 quid a day to go towards fuel, food and marina costs. If you are let on for free you can take it as either being a dam good sailor who knows how to helm a yacht in all conditions or the skipper is looking for his 'Girl Friday'.

As far as cargo ships go, well yes it possible and there are a few websites around that might be able to facilitate you. Its probably better to go to ports and ask around the captains as to what ship is going where. You'll have to pay for this too and for some travelling for weeks in cramped, smelly dormitories on one of these vessels with a bunch of Ukrainian crewmen is not considered holidaying, more so adventure.

Seeking passage on a yacht is far more preferable than taking a ride with a cargo vessel. www.floatplan.com sometimes has yacht owners in SE Asia waters seeking crew, there are dozens of other websites for crew too, just google away.

Finally Ive an article on hitch-hiking with yachts here
