Vincent Browne on Nightly News (TV3)

Does anyone else agree that Vincent Browne sometimes talks as if he is pissed? He just goes on and on, off at a tangent, interrupting the guests incessantly and to the point of embarrassment. He seems to take himself for a bit of a comedian. He also sometimes just does not appear to grasp the seriousness of a topic, such as recently with the trafficking of women into Ireland for the purpose of prostitution. Makes you cringe!

Sometimes this place amazes me. It’s supposed to provoke debate and discussion and this is the best that a mod can come up with.

I agree with OP – Vincent Brown does this all the time but he always has and that’s why TV3 hired him. He really loves the sound of his own voice and is often far from the impartial presenter. He’s fairly sound though and seems to take criticism from guests with a pinch of salt.

I think Nightly News is fairly good. Although it's disappointing that he doesn't 'sigh' or grunt during interviews as much as he did on his radio show. He's become a bit more domesticated since joining TV3. Can't say I miss the arias.

Sorry mosesgun... you'll find you'll need a sense of humour if you want to hang around here. :)

I like Nightly News - its a good show, and I'll watch it if nothing else is on. However, I preferred Vincent Browne on the radio (his late night show on Radio 1 was excellent).

My mother is a different story though... she used to go to bed early every night so she could listen to his radio show, but she doesn't watch the TV3 show at all.

Out of interest. What do you think a moderator is?

I dunno, I 've watched it a few times now in the last few weeks. I like it a lot. It's an enjoyable prog for me. Beats the Panel imo! 50/50 for Q and A, depending who's on. Good selection of guests. I like it.

Definitions of moderator on the Web:

A material used in a nuclear reactor to slow down the fast neutrons emitted in the process of fission.
    www.ieer.org/ensec/no-1/gloss.html

This is material which slows down the neutrons released from fission so that they cause more fission. It is usually water, but may be heavy water or graphite.
    www.eoearth.org/article/Nuclear_power_reactor

Moderators are used to lower ("moderate") the energies of a portion of the neutrons emitted by fissioning uranium atoms, to increase their probability of hitting another uranium atom to cause further fissioning. Graphite and light water are frequently used as moderators.
    www.nuce.boun.edu.tr/glossary.html

A body of material that surrounds the source of neutrons, spallation or fission. Containing light atoms, for example heavy water or methane, the moderator slows neutrons by repeated collisions to deliver the required energy distribution for neutron scattering experimentation.
    www.neutrons.cclrc.ac.uk/Report/glossary.aspx

I like those definitions but its probably this one

Moderators may be more or less active, depending on the discussion group in question. Some serve only to prevent inappropriate messages (such as spam or flames) from being distributed to the list, whereas in other lists, the moderator may guide discussion or even compile hand-selected posts into ...

I don't think that he sometimes talks as if he is pissed ... that's just his mannerism ...
He does however interrupt the guests incessantly though if the discussion / debate is not going the way he wants instead of letting it flow and see how it develops and i don't agree with that style of his at all being honest ...

At times i do dispare and turn away from the man though and he has been known to take his anti-Fianna Fail stance too far
