Mobile phone as a modem

    Hi everybody.

I think of using my phone as a PC modem, but cannot find any information about how to configure it, nor pricing.

The phone is detected by my laptop without a problem, but don't know what number to dial? And what money would they charge?

It would be good to compare prices between all operators, but on the websites I can only find the "web on the phone", which I don't want.

    I'm currently using Vodafone prepaid.

depending on the the handset type (sony eric, nokia etc) you're using most new versions of PC suite will provide a function to automatically connect as a modem. as for prices, unless you're on some kind of data bundle, dont even consider doing it

get a 3 modem, usb 21euro per month,10gig dl allowance/cap from 3 .if you have a laptop ,i see no point in messing round with phones.theres no cheap data service in eire 4mobiles at present.

Depends on the operator you're with.

3 do a tenner a month addon - you can get it on PAYG.

It's slightly limited in that you can't do certain things but I find it fine for browsing.

as someone else pointed out: it would help if you stated what phone you use!!??? But, yeah, commonly you'd get some kind of software bundle on a disk with your handset that includes a connect application... I'm on vodafone prepay, and for real internet use, the tariffs are too expensive (forget youtube etc...); it's alright for a quick peek, or to reply to emails though.

one way to get a good compromise is to install opera mini on your pc/laptop... Yes, it's possible - you need a java machine etc etc...takes 5 minutes to setup: advantage is that opera mini uses very little data (like on your phone) but you can use it at full screen size and you can use the pc's keyboard... I use it when on the road and without a speedy connection!
I'll try to find the links for the right setup/download, and post them later!!!

ok, HERE: this explains what you need to run om at full screensize on a pc, how to set it up, and what java apps to get first, and where - it's really easier than it seems at first, and very useful when on a slow/expensive connection:

use your phone's wap browser to go to www.mini.opera.com

    Thanks for the replies.

What I wanted, was just some web access to check mail and stuff without any investments (that's why I wanted to use the phone built-in modem).

However, it seems that the only way is to purchase the hsdpa modem. Probably 3 would be the best, as they offer prepaid access.

    Cheers!
