Laptop Wireless Problems

Long story short, my brothers laptop was giving him grief, with the dreaded blue screen thing and a start-up loop. Whatever he did, he managed to delete the operating system.

The only windows disk i had here was a windows xp home edition (came with my pc about 4 years back). So anyways, i loaded it onto the laptop and it works fine for what he needs, except i cant connect to wireless internet.

It only gives me the lan option, and there are no 'connect to' or 'wireless' options at all. Obviously its to do with the face the disk was for a pc.

Is there any way around this so he can use this laptop to connect wirelessly?? Or will he have to reinstall a different operating system.

    Many thanks in advance.

What brand/model is the laptop ?

It should be possible to find out what type of wireless controller is built in - it's quite likely the required driver is easily available.

If you can't easily tell what brand/model the laptop is ... can you access the BIOS ?
It might be clear from the BIOS settings what the wireless controller is, which again will help you find the right driver.

Its an Iqon laptop with Intel Celeron something or other.

Did you try turn the thing over and read the detail from the tags there. Then do a search on the manufacturers site for the model. I'm sure there will be full driver downloads, I have seen many units sorted that way.

I think iQon are made by Phillips ... I could be wrong. Are they the ones sold by Tesco ?

Can you get any more details on the model number ?

LM7WM appears to be the only model number.

OK ... you could try rebooting the machine, and press F10 at startup. This should trigger a recovery partition on the disk, which will bring you back to the factory image, complete with drivers and fully licensed as well ... which is nice :)

Although, you may have wiped this partition when you reinstalled already. :(

If you don't want to do that, and you'd like to persevere with the driver search, google returns this page, which might be a good match. Before you try the drivers on this page - check out the manual, and see if it looks like the same machine - it could well be a rebadge.

I'll try the re-boot, although i suspect you are right when you say its already gone :)

If not, ill try the drivers on the site.

    Many Thanks. Much appreciated.

I'll let you know how i got on tomorrow.

    Best of luck.

Make sure you have backups of any important data on the disk before you start.

    :)

Well the drivers don't seem to solve it.

The Windows XP disk was an old one, so i installed service pack 2 as well.

I really haven't a clue at this stage, i suspect a lot of the drivers need updating.

    Ok, back to basics.

When in Windows, right-click on My Computer, select Manage.

Go to Device Manager. Look for any Yellow exclamation marks. Let us know if you find any.

Certainly sounds like a driver problem.
