Long overdue NCT

    Can anybody help with this.

I am considering buying a car with no NCT. That bit in itself is not a big deal but then I found out there is no NCT on this car for 3/4 years - its 00-D and is in good nick i'm not too worried about the NCT with respect to the car just what happens when I buy it.

does anyone know if I would have to pay the arrears on the NCT or if it starts from when I purchased it?

Cant find any info on the NCT website so thought I would check if any of the fine individuals on Board.ie might be able to help.

    thanks in advance!

Sisters NCT was overdue by 4 years, just flew through.2 years nct now:D.. Mine though was out for a year and they back dated it a year. No extra costs though.

No, you'll just have to pay for the test.

Also, it would be worth checking when the due date is - the NCT works in 2 year blocks from the registration date.
    i.e.
If an NCT is expired for e.g. 1 years and 9 months, they'll backdate it and you'll only get 3-months out of the cert.
    If it's expired e.g. 2 years 2 months then you'll get 1yr 10 months from the cert.

You might get a 'short' NCT cert, ie valid for less than 2 years. This is because they backdate from when the last one was due.

Why not get the seller to NCT it before you buy and make it a condition of sale? You say it's in good nick but there are some things you generally can't check without specialised equipment, e.g. brake efficiency and brake inbalance.

The NCT report will identify any failures, and also warn you about items currently within spec but which may need attention soon such as a weak shock or tracking (especially if the car has new(ish) tyres which could conceal a wear problem).

Once you see the results you'll be in a better position to make an informed decision... "deal or no deal" as they say.

(Not exactly the question you asked OP but I hope relevant)

Yes get the seller to send it through the NCT before buying. If there is nothing wrong with the car as you say then it should fly through it.

Selling a car with a fresh NCT will only enhance it's appeal to a potential buyer so unless the seller is hiding something seriously wrong with the car I don't understand why they would not do it when selling. It only costs €50 and an hour of their time.

Thanks for all the help folks, think I will get him to put it through the NCT first. Seems to be the safest option all round !

Book your NCT for 1st July 2014, and you will get valid cert till 30th Sept 2015.
However you will probably have to avoid driving the car for next two months without NCT.

I'm not 100% sure the early rule applies where the car doesn't have a current NCT, does anyone know for definite what the story is?

It does. It's 180 days in advance for first time NCT and 90 days for all others.

PS : OP, don't book for 1st July because that's outside the 90 days, leave it for a day or 2 later.

    Validity of test certificate

    11. (1) Subject to paragraph (2), a test certificate ceases to be in force on that test due date which occurs after the certificate to which it relates was issued.

    (2) A test certificate which is issued—

    (a) not more than 180 days before the first test due date, or

    (b) not more than 90 days before a test due date other than the first test due date,

continues in force until the subsequent test due date.

There's nothing more annoying then seeing cars advertised 'ready for NCT', 'will pass no bother'

    So NCT it yourself then!

It tells me one of two things. They are a lazy bollocks and not worth my time or money, or they are lying and there is something wrong with the car.

I've no problem with a seller who sells a car without an NCT but is honest about what it needs to get it through.

    /rant

Sometimes a new thread is better.
