When you process your photos, do you remove the exif? If you do, why?

    Just curious here.

I always keep the exif in the file, and find it very useful to be able to review the exif data when seeing images on Flickr or such.

I know a lot of people seem to upload photos to here, and flickr and have the exif removed, and I'm curious as to why they remove the exif data.

I'm aware that such a thing exists, I know I'd like to hang onto it in my photos but it doesn't seem to happen.

Any chance of an idiots guide to EXIF from those in the know?

is it a matter of stripping out the exif or just choosing not to display in on Flickr??

    Yeah, forgot that option too.

There is an option to hide/display the exif on FlickR, but that will just remove the option on the image to show extra information.

But, if you post a link to the image (on boards) then an exif reader would still be able to read the exif from the file (if the file contains the exif).

Two web pages that seem useful in relation to exif -

    http://www.digicamhelp.com/learn/glossary/exif.php

I use the 'save for web' option in photoshop elements before uploading to flickr because it's handy but that strips the exif.
It's handy if the exif data is available and I'd rather leave it in.

I would never delete it but if my software does then i dont know about it.
I hate seeing a photo on flickr and wondering(or asking)what camera was used for it

thanks a mill. I would never have noticed, When converting to JPEG in Elements, Puff Gone.,
I will need to review my export workflow to prevent this in the Future

    - Busy weekend ahead.

Anyone any tips onthe best way of ensuring EXIF is kept in during Export in Elements 6?

I think when you do a "save for web" you strip out the exif. So, just use the "save as" option, and use the compression setting instead.

    Thanks PaulW,
I generally used the 'Export tool' but must check out at the weekend

Does the "save for web" option in Photoshop really strip the exif data?
Is it east to strip it out ?

Try it for yourself and see. Yes, "save for web" does strip the exif.

Not sure but....when I use my cd that came with my Canon Zoombrowser ex (and other programmes) I can press view tab and it shows me shooting information, I assume because pix.ie doesn't support exif that when I right click on my picture in pix I get no inofrmation.
I don't have a flickr account so can't test that way.
I'd be delighted if I don't strip the exif information out of my photographs.
I too love looking at pics and being able to see the exif info.

    :)

Yes, it seems that pix.ie strips out the exif. I just sent them an email to ask why, and if there is a way to enable it to keep the exif.

I don't use my pix.ie account much at all.

I have asked Marcus on the pix.ie thread lots of times about including exif!!
Apparently it's 2nd in line to be done after the group thing.

I use EXIF viewer plugin in Firefox. Generally I find that the original image in flickr or Pix.ie usually have a wealth of EXIF info in them. The resized ones never do. Simply right click the original image and choose 'View Image Exif Data'. Below is a screen shot of an image off Animalrights Pix.ie site with the Exif data intact. ;)

The exif is only contained in the original (full size) image on pix.ie. It is not contained in any of the sized versions of the file.

I use FF so how do I get to use the EXIF plugin? :)

    Here's one option - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3905

    I actually prefer - http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/

There are probably a few EXIF plugins out there.
