UPS and custom charges

I bought an electronic item from amazon at a price of around $40. I paid $70 for UPS in shipping and handling. Upon delivery they are asking an additional 33 euro ($54). How can this be? Is the customs not only a percentage of the base product.

Any assistance on this and how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

Was $40 the actual value or a sale price? I know Amazon print the full price on the documents regardless of what you paid. Have you asked UPS for a breakdown of the charges, ie whats tax and whats their charge?

The price was $38.48 but went through another organisation called Adorama. I didn't have enough funds today to pay the guy so I'll ask him for a receipt tomorrow of all the charges

You have to pay customs on the total cost inc shipping.
UPS also charge an administration fee of 16 euro.
They also use a rubbish exchange rate.
I do not use UPS anymore as they nearly always charge customs.
    So that would be
    38+70 =$108*0.21 Vat = $23
They will convert that as around 17 euro using their ****e rates.
Add the 16 admin fee to get the 33 euro they want.

Thanks very much - i know its not a lot, but once stung... Never using their service again! Its still weird they use the shipping and handling as an additional surplus on the base item to be imported! Is this how irish customs policy is handled?

Nothing weird about it. customs duties are payable on the landed costs of the goods.

So they also VAT their service that they provide? I would have though that the shipping and handling covered the service from A to B!

What is the value you are allowed to get shipped from America without any custom charges getting added?

EDIT: found out here that it is 22 euro

The VAT is on the customs duty. There is also VAT included in the customs processing charge. The shipping fee only covers the cost of getting the item to its destination. The shipping fee does not include any customs duties that may be payable.
